The Nintendo Switch, released in 2017 and manufactured by Nintendo Company Ltd., is becoming increasingly popular with the latest technology.
But despite the fact that the Switch does double duty as a home and mobile console, Nintendo continues to be cranking out new derivations on its pure lightweight line. The brand-new Nintendo 2DS XL may be the newest and, in lots of ways, the best Nintendo lightweight yet. The 2DS XL retains the big twin screens of its predecessor, the New Nintendo 3DS XL, but loses the gimmicky 3D effect. In addition to that, the 2DS XL includes a slimmed-down variant of 3DS XL clamshell design. It is available in America, UK and Australia priced at $150, 130 and AUD$200 respectively.
The Nintendo 2DS XL offers a design that fans of any generation will enjoy and with its quality game library, there is not much here to dislike. But just like the recent PlayStation 4 Slim and Xbox One S, this is only a less expensive repackaging of a preexisting console—effectively, it’s a 3DS XL at a lower price rather than anything new. The 2DS XL’s best features are its sturdy construction, excellent game library and affordability.
This review was published on June 26 and has been updated to reflect the new 2DS XL.
The 2DS XL is a folding hand-held with a look and feel similar to all the other DS units. The difference between this one and the original 2DS released back in 2013 is that it has two screens where the previous version only had one.
The dimensions are almost identical to the 3DS XL. Both pack very best screens – one on top and one below (the lower screen a touchscreen); both sit at around 6.3 by 3.4 by 0.8 inches when closed (160 by 86 by 20mm). However, the 2DS XL is much lighter than its 3DS XL counterpart. It weighs 238 grams (or 8.4 ounces) – making it noticeably more convenient to carry around with you. On top of that, both halves will close together smoothly into one large curved edge rather than leaving a big crevasse on the left side like the 3
The matte finish on the plastic and raised ridges make both sides of the Nintendo 2DS XL look a lot better than previous models. The hinge is still exposed, but this time it leaves more room for using the top screen. The cartridge slot is hidden for safety reasons, and the console feels familiar because it’s built upon a very successful design.
Depending on where you live, the new 2DS comes in one of two stylish colours: black and turquoise or white and orange. Either way, the colourpieces ensures a bold look that offsets the toy’s two flat surfaces nicely. I chose the black and aqua color, because if something is moving into my bag, it will not stay white for long.
I get really annoyed with the physical design of this 2DS XL. It’s bigger than the regular one, and has a bigger screen. Why does the stylus have to be so short? I measured, and it’s just half an inch shorter than a 3DS XL stylus, which is really important when you’re trying to do anything. This means that for the first time in years, I was able to comfortably hold slender objects like pens or pencils without feeling like my fingers were about to snap. Or even more likely, kids hands. If you are an adult who wants a handheld that fits your hands, don’t get this option.
With the 2DS/3DS, you will be able to experience the standard DS experience. Its features include full connectivity for accessing the Nintendo web store as well as decades of games from previous nintendo consoles (not forgetting newer 2DS/3DS game releases). The games, such as Pokemon Sun and Moon, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 7, together with keystone brands including Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask & A CONNECTION BETWEEN Worlds are all less expensive than ever. If you’re willing to search for used versions of these games, there may be a great The nintendo 2ds xl aims to make an impression on current DS or early-generation device owners, although it doesn t offer any compelling reasons motivating them to uproot themselves.
Nintendo hasn’t fixed some of the frustrations that bedeviled fans on its last console. Transferring downloaded games in one 2DS/3DS console to a different continues to be a Sisyphean nightmare. Meanwhile, with Virtual Console plans for the Switch still largely up in the air, it’s unclear if any online 2DS/3 Nintendo’s 2DS XL might be a little more powerful, but retaining the 3-D functionality appears to have come at the expense of battery life and living room play on its tiny display.
While the system is still plastic, it does feel better than both predecessor models.
On the inside
On the outside surfaces of both models, it has a matte finish. The inside is reflective and lit up well in the sunlight
You re missing one thing the 3-D functionality in which I found distracting.
The 2DS XL features minor updates to the 3DS XL, solving a few of that latter handheld’s most annoying problems. Although one nice thing about the 3DS XL is that it includes a proprietary AC adapter, which isn’t included in the box.
The Nintendo 2DS XL has the potential to last up to 7 hours. A game like Professor Layton (a nonintensive puzzle game) can last about 8 hours on a charge. But graphically intense games like Legend of Zelda: Majora s Mask only get 4 hours before the battery dies. That test period was done by Eurogamer on Mario Kart 7. Along with the current settings maxed out in torture mode, it kept a charge for days. Of course, when you get the opportunity to plug it in overnight, that is even better.
The 2DS XL has all the features of its 3D brother including a C stick, additional ZL/ZR shoulder buttons, NFC for accessing your Nintendo Amiibo figurines, Wi-Fi connection, front and back cameras and parental controls.
