LG tests the limits of televisions with its 2018 models, including a major upgrade in appearance, but these improvements to the TV have an impact on performance. In the following article, we look at two great TVs from 2017 that still offer an upgrade in 4K HDR and picture quality which makes them stunning choices for living rooms today.
If you are in the market for current technology, browse the newer LG B8 OLED TV but, if you want a cheaper device that still performs well take a look at last year’s model: The LG B7.
The B7 is an attractive, space-saving TV with a thin silver bezel and crescent stand that hold the panel close to the wall. A white plastic casing contrasts with a silver finish in front of the screen on this slim TV. The design is quite stylish, although the silver frame can easily be distracting when you have any light in your room.
The panel is thin and you can mount it directly to the wall.
The screen has four HDCP 2.2 compatible HDMI inputs which means they can be used to connect 4K sources like a UHD Blu-ray player, video game system, and set top box.
Additionally, there are three USB inputs, of which one is a fast v3.0 input, an electronic optical music output and Ethernet. Wi-Fi is standard. Gleam satellite tuner and Freeview Play terrestrial tuner.
The set includes a single remote, the latest version of LG’s cursor-based pointer, which navigates the WebOS smart platform. It is responsive and intuitive to use.
Design TL;DR: The B7 doesn’t have a black bezel and thin frame like most other 4K UHD TVs. It has a silver-colored bezel with small feet at the bottom of the panel.
Smart TV (WebOS 3.5)
LG has made updates to the 3.5 version of its webOS platform, but thankfully it hasn’t altered the intuitive UI in any significant way.
The Home screen menu is made up of a stripe-featured Launch Bar, which provides quick access to apps, inputs and features. First slot goes to live TV along with HDMI selection followed by streaming software and catch-up TV services. Scrolling further provides options such as the OLED gallery, Screen Share for casting from cellular devices and multimedia playback ( If you often use a Miracast, simply access the Screen Share tab on your remote and drag it to where you would like to buy.
It is easy to pause streaming Netflix or Amazon video right from the remote. You can then go back to where you left off without losing your place and time in the movie.
Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube all have 4K content available on their platforms.
LG has done a fantastic job with the design and interface of their webOS smart TV.
OLED displays provide exceptional performance for both 1080p content and media upscaled to 4K.
The LG B7A 4k OLED TV does a convincing job with skin tones and bright primaries. You’ll hardly notice any noise.
The phone has a variety of image presets. It can be on or off HDR Mode, but we don’t feel like it does much good so leave it off.
HD/SDR Performance TL;DR: The B7 looks great with HD content and its SDR performance is bright and color rich. It will reinvigorate your Blu-ray collection.
The LG B7A 4K OLED TV delivers an excellent image quality with sources set to 4K. When viewed in the right mode, it becomes a glistening marvel of sorts.
The available preset color modes are Standard, Eco, Cinema, Sports, Game, HDR effect mode and Vivid. The most dependable everyday setting is Standard which has a great average brightness level as well as an excellent range of depth in the picture with significant details defined through both vividly bright and dark areas.
Out of the box, this set will display a distracting moir patterning with high frequency 4K signals. To disable this effect, head to Aspect Ratio and make sure “Just Scan” is On. It is the only way to make certain that (some) high detail isn t being obscured.
A zone plate test pattern revealed that this screen cannot resolve fine 4K image detail. Compared to other TVs, the picture on the LG is more blurry. However, this shouldn’t be a problem for someone who isn’t watching content at 4K resolution and beyond. Subjectively, UHD images look very sharp.
The set has no problem with content mastered at 1000 cd/m2/nits, although there is some low level black clipping. The set’s color performance is fabulous too, with deep rich colors. We had no problems with color banding.
In Standard mode, the OLED measured 779 cd/m2/nits of luminance in a 5 % window.
LG offers support for every HDR standard that counts HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision.
Despite Dolby Vision’s promise of delivering superior quality video even when viewing 4k content, one recent study and review shows that the technology is not consistently successful.
Okja is an extraordinary example of streamed Dolby Vision. This recently-released movie showcases beautifully-shot early scenes of the titular Super Pig, wandering through a South Korean forest in dappled sunlight.
Netflix’s UHD resolution is impressive: the texture on Okja’s hide and the detail in the landscape is all highly detailed. However, their subtitles are too bright; usually the brightest component of a picture, its Dolby Vision glare does nothing for balance with these characters.
Consider also Glow, a comedy drama about women’s wrestling in the Eighties. The Dolby Vision presentation here is downright awful. Spectral highlights often look comically overblown due to backlight windows in the women’s gym that beam with atomic radiance and high-intensity lights that burn like small suns (remember on the B7 you can Streaming a quality film via Amazon Fire TV on an lg b7a 4k oled television is like being in the theatre.
In terms of motion handling, the B7 does an acceptable job. For sports coverage we recommend the Clear Trumotion setting with general TV viewing on User (de-judder off) and for movies you should just leave it at zero.
In terms of black performance, the TV is predictably great. There is some low-level clipping with blacks crushing out near-black shadow detail. Tone mapping holds white level detail on content mastered to 1000 nits.
This TV has the best price for a 4K display. With Mad Max: Fury Road and other UHD Blu-ray players, there are some spectacular effects that really stand out with the lg b7a 4k oled tv . When Max is caught in a sandstorm, you can see lightning strike brilliantly against dark colors. On his
Similarly, the catacomb sequence in John Wick Chapter 2 has a lot of seen detail.
The LG B7A 4K OLED TV is a high performing HDR model and produces excellent picture quality. High brightness combined with vivid colors creates an enjoyable viewing experience for viewers.
The B7’s speakers are decent for a slim, lightweight TV-but not fantastic. Surround sound is all the rage these days, and you should aim to upgrade them as soon as possible if that’s what you’re looking for.
The set also offers a Dolby Atmos decoder, and (and other 2017 OLED sets from LG), a Netflix client that receives both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos streams.
Netflix original movie Okja may be the first Netflix content to provide Dolby Atmos with Dolby Vision. To take full advantage of this, viewers will have to route the Atmos audio tracks from set using HDMI ARC to a Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbar or AV receiver.
The set s standard low-fi TV speakers are underwhelming, but the HDMI firmware update allows an
Atmos signal to be passed through which is easy enough to solve by attaching an external audio system.
Other panels to ponder…
The LG B7 is priced similarly to a few comparable Samsung and Sony OLED TVs, but lacks Dolby Vision support. The 55-inch Panasonic EZ952 has a lower brightness and doesn t give you Dolby Vision support, but it offers sharper 4K. Philips not only offers Ambilight with the 55POS901F , but it
If you are looking to go one step further with your TV, the Sony A1 OLED 4K is worth saving for. It combines Acoustic Surface technology with an incredible HDR UHD picture.
Improved text: If you wish to intensify a notch, Sony’s 65-inch A1 OLED is really worth saving for. This screen combines progressive Ac
Overall, the 55-inch LG B7 is an excellent 4K TV. Offering vibrant and dynamic HDR images, it’s one of the best on the market with its profound black depth. UHD isn’t even necessary for best results – regular HD will suffice.
The LG OLEDB7A, while not the best looking 4K TV on the market, is made more worthwhile with Dolby Vision and HDR coverage. In addition, the LG B7A features a first-class Linked functionality with WebOS for a user-friendly Smart platform and there are Intensive catch up services available through Freeview Play. When it comes to finding a TV that looks great on your wall and doesn’t break the bank,
