The IdeaPad 320 I tested costs $423 and has an Intel Core i3-7100U processor, 4GB of RAM and a 1TB 5,400-rpm HDD.

Lenovo doesn’t sell the IdeaPad 320 on their site, so finding another one with different configurations could be difficult. I did come across one with an AMD A12-9720P processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD for $329 though.

Design

Lenovo has a budget-apropriate laptop in store with its IdeaPad 320. The only thing that really stands out on the lid is the glossy, silver Lenovo logo located in the left upper corner. And to keep things interesting, there’s a two-toned design, with an off-white bottom surface made of inexpensive plastic and black aluminum This almost tricked me into believing it was aluminum, with the darker gray undersides highlighting the plastic.

The interior includes a silver faux-aluminum design that spans the complete deck. The keyboard sits on the deck with no dip or stylized accents to introduce it. The bezels are annoyingly thick, but that isn t unusual for a budget laptop.

The IdeaPad 320 is about the same size as other laptops its price range, but at 4.5 pounds and 0.9 inches you will need to think about when carrying this laptop in a backpack or purse.

Ports

The left side features the energy jack, a RJ45 port, an HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, a headphone jack and one Type-C port.

The left side features a security lock slot and a DVD-RW drive.

Display

The IdeaPad 320’s 15.6-inch display is not pleasant to view and has a disappointingly dim resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

The black suit worn by Jim Carrey and Neal McDonough in His Sonic the Hedgehog trailer appeared dull, as if they stepped out of the military through a washer. When James Marsden broke into the garage where he learned to use Sonic, it was difficult to make out any of the tools that hung on the wall due to their dimness.
Marsden’s hair may have also been sharper at this point in time.

The IdeaPad’s display covered 67% of the sRGB gamut, falling short of the 77% average for mainstream laptop computers. It isn’t surprising that this is true, because we see that the Aspire E 15 (62%), VivoBook Flip 14 (69%) and Swift 1 (66%) also landed in the same range.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Lenovo has made some concessions in the IdeaPad 320 for its low price, but it retains Lenovo’s signature keyboard quality. The matte-gray, shield-shaped keys were comfortable to type on and responsive.

I hit 68 words each minute on 10fastfingers.com typing test, which is near my 70 wpm average. The keys traveled at 1.4 millimeters and required 68 grams of force, which is consistent with our 1 mm safe place and 60g the least force

The Lenovo Yoga Book features a touchpad that is both soft and responsive, but you can’t disable certain touch features.

Performance and Graphics

The IdeaPad 320 s Core i3-7100U processor with 4GB of RAM was only in a position to handle 15 Google Chrome tabs and a 1080p YouTube video before the system became sluggish. Even the Windows 10 search bar lagged when I attemptedto pull up these devices manager.

The IdeaPad 320 performed poorly when tested on the Geekbench 4 efficiency test, posting a score that is less than half of the mainstream notebook average. Its weak performance falls below other notebooks such as the Aspire E 15, VivoBook Flip 14 and Swift 1.

The IdeaPad 320 took two minutes and 12 seconds to complete our Excel test, which is a full minute slower than the category average of 2:12. That said, it was faster than the VivoBook Flip 14 (3) and Swift 1 (2).

The IdeaPad 320 with an Intel HD 620 GPU scored 51,856 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited graphics benchmark and fell behind our mainstream average of 61,665. The VivoBook Flip 14 s Intel HD 615 GPU (51,586) and Swift 1 s Intel UHD 605 GPU (32,238) weren t

Real-world testing showed that the IdeaPad 320 was barely able to hit 30 fps on the Dirt 3 benchmark, falling below the category average of 45 fps.

Battery Life

We have tested the laptop at 150 nits of brightness and WiFi always on. The Battery lasted only 4 hours, 24 minutes, which is a lot less than 2 hours shorter compared to mainstream notebooks (6:48). The VivoBook Flip 14, Aspire E 15 and Swift 1 all have a better than average battery life relative to other laptops.

Webcam

Lenovo Ideapad 320 comes with 720p webcam that captures all the details. Colors are a wee bit darker but its understandable given the settings of the room. My shirt barely showed up due to the lack of contrast in my webcam.

Heat

The IdeaPad 320 is quiet thanks to its low power because it stays cool. We ran a 15-minute blu ray movie on this notebook and the temperature only reached 83 degrees, which is well below our threshold of 95 degrees. The temperature of the keyboard and touchpad measured at 79 and 74 degrees, respectively.

Bottom Line

Though the Lenovo IdeaPad 320 has a poor battery life and subpar display, its keyboard is clicky and it has many ports.

If you would like to save some money, the $379 Acer Aspire E 15 includes a better processor with extra RAM, more battery life and a brighter 1080p display.

Value-seeking customers may want to look elsewhere because there are many more laptops on the market at a lower price point.
