Like many of its competitors, including the UE Boom series, the JBL Charge 3 can be waterproof so it can be used at the pool or beach without any fear of splashes or water accidents.

The JBL Charge 2 was a favorite due to its long battery life, high-end materials and sound quality. It would be tough for the Charge 3 not to live up to that legacy. With two small issues resolved, we can state confidently that this is an improvement on its predecessor’s line of speakers.

JBL has released the cheaper Charge 3 since we published this review. When you can find it at a price worth buying, it might be worth checking out. Here are some more cool speakers

JBL Charge 3: design

The JBL Charge 3 is a sizeable speaker and will need up your backpack with its lengthy dimensions. It weighs 1.76 pounds, making it another cumbersome addition to your bag.

The biggest drawback of the Charge 3 is its battery life. It only lasts 20 hours while most Bluetooth speakers provide up to 24 hours.

The new Charge 3 is waterproof and can survive water up to a meter deep for thirty minutes.

At the top of this speaker you will find buttons for power, Bluetooth pairing, volume control, play/pause/skip and a distinctive JBL Connect button. The last button lets you link multiple pieces of JBL Connect speakers to be able to amplify the sound by playing two together as a stereo pair (just like LG Musicflow p7 and Razer

The JBL Charge 3 features two external passive radiators that you can visibly see vibrate with bass-heavy tracks.

Although I am not thrilled with exposed radiators, the JBL Charge 3 has a rubber guard that guards against poking and allows you to stand it up vertically.

JBL Charge 3: performance and features

While it may be large on the outside, the sound this speaker produces is anything but. With temperature extremes, big spaces and obstacles all affecting its output, it’s most impressive when experienced within a 20-foot radius of the bluetooth speaker.

The Charge 3 offered the most powerful bass we’ve heard from a lightweight Bluetooth speaker. The sound was at its fullest on hard surfaces, such as tabletops. The Charge 3 can stand vertically, but we found that sound quality was negatively affected.

This speaker is capable of delivering loud music without distortion in a number of different genres. You won’t be disappointed with the quality and bass levels, which are always impressive no matter what you’re listening to.

The Bose Soundlink Mini touts better violin detail, but the highs weren’t always clear. As is the case with most speakers, there is a trade-off between affordability and sound quality.

One useful feature of the Charge 3 is its built-in mic, which lets you use it as a speakerphone for conference calls. We found that people on the other end heard us loud and clear, even though we were speaking through the speaker.

We liked

The JBL Charge 3 offers excellent sound for the purchase price. The waterproofing an important thing addition, but it brings with its additional weight to be that Bluetooth speaker you may take just about anywhere. The speaker also acts as a power bank for your phone, so you can keep the tunes playing hot.

We disliked

The Charge 3 is a major speaker that will weigh down your backpack. Fortunately, it being waterproof is nice (though you’re paying for the feature). Even though its exposed woofers may not sound as good as others after the drop or run-in with something poking around in your bag, they look pretty cool.

Final verdict

The JBL Charge 3 is a definite improvement over the last generation for only about every category.

The Charge 3 is a much-improved speaker than the original and has significant improvements in build quality, battery life, sound quality as well as additional features.

The JBL Charge 3 is a compelling package that offers excellent sound quality in addition to other features.

For $150 (149.99, about AU$200), the Charge 3 is a great package for your money. I actually prefer it to our Editor’s Choice-winning UE Boom 2 because of its slightly better sound and ability to charge my phone. With a lower price, the JBL Charge 3 offers some of the features of its more expensive rivals, making it a sound buy.
