Bose s two new portables, battery-powered Bluetooth speakers will be the SoundLink Revolve ($199, 200 or AU$299) and its own bigger brother. The Revolve Plus ($299, 280 or AU$439) bose soundslink revolve plus

Bose’s Revolve Plus is a lantern-style speaker that’s 30% larger and sounds much better than previous models.

The device combines duel-opposing passive radiators with water and shock-resistant transducer. The speaker can be mounted to a stand or tripod if desired but is designed to connect wirelessly via NFC or Bluetooth. Bose sells a charging cradle for $30, which is more functional than using the included USB cable.

The Revolve Plus sounds better to be a matter of choice than anything I’ve put faith in the same class over. At 7.25 inches (18.42 cm) tall, it s just marginally taller compared with the UE Megaboom, which came at $300 but could be had for less

The Soundlink Revolve Plus sounds a bit louder than the Megaboom, has more bass and provide richer sound. Especially if you’re looking to use it outside often, but don t underestimate a huge step down for those making use of their speaker inside. It is unfair that the fully waterproof Megaboom doesn’t sound as good as Bose.

Compared to its little brother, the Revolve Plus speaker plays louder and has a better bass response. Higher quality sound makes it better than both the SoundLink Mini II and the SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker III.

The Revolve speakers don’t sound as good in larger spaces but are surprisingly loud for their small size. They would be better suited for apartments and smaller homes.

While you may feel that 360-degree sound means they’re best positioned in the center of an area, it actually really helps to place these speakers near a wall to get some good reflection, which increases the bass.

Apart from its size, 5.5 ounces, the Revolve Plus speaker comes with an integrated microphone that allows it to function as a speakerphone and NFC tap-to-pair technology for any devices that support it . Moreover, you can wirelessly pair two of the speakers (or other recent Bose Bluetooth speakers) using the Bose Connect app

To test stereo pairing, I played a trio of album tracks from the 60s and 70s (The Rolling Stones, The Doors and The Beatles) that have major separation. They sounded best for compact, battery-powered wireless speakers but don t expect 2 Revolve Plus to beat an average group of wireless powered speakers including Bose’s own SoundTouch

Louder, meet smaller

When I say that Bose sounds excellent, what I mean is that it sounds better than most other small Bluetooth speakers. The truth is you might come across a patch where you tell yourself the sound quality isn’t as good. The Revolve Plus does a pretty good job of transmitting audio throughout a small space but falls short when it comes to streaming.

The Bose SoundLink Revolve Plus and Boom 2 are excellent mid-range speakers.

The sound quality of the Bose Revolve Plus may be better than wired speakers, but not by much. Most people will find that this speaker is an excellent tool for those who want to move around the house or outside and still have enough volume to enjoy their music.

I also like the smaller SoundLink Revolve, but ultimately decided to go for the Plus. Though it has inferior sound quality, I think the integrated handle is a nice touch and it can be more easily portable due to its size. Having said that, it’s a shame neither speaker has an optional charging cradle.
