The Dell G5 15 SE (2020) is one of the first gaming laptops with new AMD hardware, but does that mean it’s worth getting? There are a few factors to consider.
For a price of $1,199, the Dell G5 15 SE with AMD R7 4800H CPU blows its competitors out of the water. With both a colorful 15.6-inch display and great battery life, this laptop seems like an incredible choice for those looking for a sturdy but understated machine.
But there’s a catch. The AMD Radeon RX 5600M GPU doesn’t surpass its Nvidia counterparts, and the G5 15 SE has a chunky design with sharp speakers.

Dell G5 15 SE (2020) price and configuration options
The Dell G5 15 SE that I tested costs $1,199 and is outfitted with an AMD Ryzen R7 4800H processor, an AMD Radeon RX 5600M GPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 144Hz 1080p display.
The base model starts with an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD and 60Hz, 1080p display with the top-end configuration offering a Ryzen 7 4800H CPU and 1TB SSD.
For those with somewhat more limited budgets, the best gaming laptops under $1,000 can help to fill that void.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) design
I love the silver paint used to cover this laptop, but its wide and plastic.
The hood is a broad landscape with an empty surface home for the silver Dell logo plus some curves that make it look like the lid of a car. At first glance, both the grilles and G5 logo on the curved hinges appear to be parts I’d find on a toy car. The plastic must go.
When I opened the lid, I could tell that where the black deck connected to the white underside was a little sharp. The inside of the Dell G5 15 SE is quite plain, including its RGB-lit keyboard Dell has recently introduced the newest version of their G5 laptop. The design is largely unchanged and you should be able to identify it in a crowd, but there are a few changes. One change is that the G5 logo at the top left corner now bears an accent over the letter S while those on the display have become thinner. I also noticed
The Dell G5 (15) SE is a little heavy – about 5.5 pounds and 14.4 x 10 x 0.9 inches while the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (13), HP Omen 15 (2019) and Lenovo Legion Y545 are lighter than they are wide at 3.52, 5.4, and
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) ports
The port selection on the Dell G5 15 SE.
It has an energy jack on the left, a mini DisplayPort and one USB 3.1 port to its right. There is also a dropjaw RJ45 Ethernet port on the left side and another USB Type-C port at the back of the computer.

Dell G5 15 SE (2020) display
For its cheaper price when compared to others in the same category, the Dell G5 15 SE laptop has quite a colorful crisp display with 144Hz.
The Capone trailer was darkened during the preview, as Tom Hardy’s trademark red scar bled through the screen. In a dark warehouse, where someone was bound and bruised to a chair, I could see white undershirts on some of the goons in the background. The screen was sharp enough to show the wrinkles and scars on Hardy’s face.
As I stealthily approached the Militarized Temple of Megara in Assassin s Creed Odyssey, I was surrounded by lush shrubbery accompanied by bright yellow flowers that popped on the display. When crawling my way through a Leader House in the dead of night, I spotted the telltale gear of a Captain in the length. When I decreased the settings and asked 144Hz to do its thang, I experienced a silky smooth frame rate.
According to your colorimeter, Dell’s G5 15 SE display matches the average mainstream gaming notebook computer and beats the HP Omen 15.
Unclear sentence: it beat the hp omen 15 s 102% and the legion y545 s 99%, but couldn t quite match the 117% from Meanwhile, the Dell G5 15 SE’s baseline 60Hz panel was able to display 63% of the sRGB color gamut. The budget gaming notebook average is 72%.
The brightness of the Dell G5 15 SE exceeded the category average at 301 nits, though it wasn t as bright as either the Zephyrus G14 or Omen 15. Conversely, the Dell G5 15 SE has a 60Hz panel to which 231 nits of brightness is achieved. Those numbers are dimmer when compared to the 268-nit average for budget gaming notebooks.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) keyboard and touchpad
Typing on the Dell G5 15 SE’s keyboard felt comfortable, though it took some getting used to. The keys were just a little shallow and far apart from one another–at first these qualities made me feel like I was going to get really frustrated with the laptop.
My typing speed of 72 words per minute is higher than my normal average. You should know that Dell Gaming laptops have a small, shallow keyboard with standard keys which offers a mediocre experience.
I love how the laptop’s RGB lighting is divided into four zones, like the numpad. On top of that, you can use the Alienware Command Center App to configure up to 16.7 million color combinations and effects.
The two-finger window scrolling and three open tabs are performed very well with the Precision drivers.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) audio
The Dell G5 15 SE’s side-firing speakers are underwhelming and lack low-end fidelity.
I listened to Nano’s Kemurikusa, and in addition to the crisp vocals, there are a lot of things going on that I did not like. Each of the electronic beats were overflowing and the drums barely had any volume because there was way too much bass. I closed the instrument panel and opened my eyes to see that they had both disappeared.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey had beautiful voice acting. When I was in combat, the slashes were louder and came off as snappier than they should have been. There also wasn t enough bass to cover everything up, which resulted in me noticing most of the percussion instruments and violins that played in the background.
In the Command Center app, you’ll find a tab for Nahimic audio software, which is helpful in improving the sound. There are many presets, such as “Alienware,” “Com,” “Movie,” “Music,” “Racing,” “Role Play” and so forth. This laptop even offers the ability to customize your own profiles. Each profile contains an Audio Effect setting and Equalizer tweak, as well as a microphone option.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) gaming, graphics and VR
Making its debut in the Dell G5 15 SE may be the only AMD Radeon RX 5600M GPU with 6GB of VRAM. AMD s new GPU hit 46 fps on Assassin s Creed Odyssey (Ultra, 1080p) as I sliced my way through a set of thugs scattered on the highway.
On the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark (Highest, 1080p), the Dell G5 15 SE averaged 45 fps. The mainstream gaming notebook computer average is 47 FPS and bottom quartile-end budget gaming average is 42 FPS. It matched the Nvidia GeForce GT 1660 Ti in the Omen 15 (45 fps), as the RTX 2060 GPU in Zephyrus G14 nailed 49 fps and the Legion Y545’s own GTX 1660 Ti got 50 fps.
The Dell G5 15 SE performs at an 83-fps clip on a Hitman benchmark (Ultra, 1080p), just below the average of 85 fps (it passed the 65-fps budget gaming average). It didn’t fare as well against other laptops in our test but hope is not lost.
In the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark, the Dell G5 15 SE got 56 fps and was above average in a variety of other tests.
The Dell G5 15 SE has taken a victory for features like its excellent performance and durability. In addition, its frame rate of 31 fps was just a small margin below the budget gaming average.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) performance
Dell G5 15 SE, which has AMD Ryzen R7 4800H Processor with 16GB of RAM that can handle 40 Chrome tabs and 5 1080p YouTube videos running in the background while Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was played. We also tested the model with an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor and 8GBs of RAM.
The Geekbench 4.3 efficiency test found the Dell G5 15 SE had 29,253 points, which was better than the average of 21,322 mainstream gaming notebooks and beat out both the Intel Core i7-9750H in the Omen 15 (19,956) and Legion Y545 (23,868). Still nowhere near
The Dell G5 15 SE transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in an impressive 6 minutes and 43 seconds. It easily beat the Omen 15 (12:34) and Legion Y545 (8:51), but also topped the Zephyrus G14 (6:59).
Dell’s 512GB SSD copied 4.97GB of data in 12.4 seconds, translating to 410 megabytes per second, only barely slower than a mainstream gaming notebook average of 467 MBps
The G5 15 reached a Geekbench score of 22,707. It outperformed the budget rating by an eight second difference on HandBrake and its SSD was 18 percent faster than budget gaming average.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) battery life
The Dell G5 15 SE lasts over 7 hours on a single battery charge and this could very well be the go-to purchase. The matte display is bright enough that you won’t need to deal with eye strain and though it has an excellent keyboard, there are some quirks. The Omen 15 (3:05) and Legion Y545 (3:38) were largely overshadowed by the only other processor standing, Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (11:32).
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) webcam
Similar to most laptops in its category, the 720p webcam included on the Dell G5 15 SE is subpar.
I couldn’t find out any detail from the hair on my head. The color was alright, albeit somewhat dull, since it caught the purple shirt in a photo of my niece standing in the background. The laptop’s camera can be susceptible to over-exposing high contrast scenes.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) heat
Among the pros may be the heat management.
The lower half of the Dell G5 15 SE reached 106 degrees Fahrenheit on our test, which is a little more than our 95-degree comfort threshold. But because it’s made of plastic, it never feels hot to the touch. The closer we got to 100 degrees on the bottom left edge of the screen, where your hands are going to reside if you’re typing away or using the touchpad, it only made sense that things would start heating up fast.
Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for just thirty minutes, the laptop never became noticeably hot due to the powerful fans keeping it cool.
Dell G5 15 SE (2020) software and warranty
One of the most useful tools in the Dell G5 15 SE may be Alienware Command Center.
From here, you can monitor your CPU, GPU and RAM use and also the temperature of one’s body and fans. You can either utilize the software or press G on your own keyboard to allow powerful while gaming. Configure power management and use the application as a central hub to manage your games.
With all these features built into the G5 15, people buy it for its quality and convenience.
The Windows 10 bloatware, such as Candy Crush Friends, Disney Magic Kingdoms and Farm Heroes Saga.
The G5 15 SE comes with a one-year warranty, and you can find it in our tech support showdown rankings.
The Dell G5 15 SE (2020) is a fantastic gaming notebook because of its wild CPU performance, amazing battery life and bright 15.6-inch display. However, the graphics card could be stronger and no one wants a bulky chassis or shrill speakers.
For gamers on a budget, the Dell G5 15 laptop offers solid specs, but you can do better for just $250 more with Asus ROG Zephyrus G14.
