Display

The Helios 500 provides an excellent picture with its 17.3-inch, 1080p, 144-Hz Nvidia G-Sync display. However, the displays on some of its competitors are slightly better.

Billy Batson’s suit, as seen in the Shazam SDCC trailer, was bright and bold despite being in a dark wizard’s lair. In an edgier battle scene with Mark Strong, brightly-colored stitching helped reinforce the heroism of his thunderbolt logo.

I loved the shiny orange residue left behind by Nazis after being killed with a trap, and I enjoyed how my gun was so nice to use.

Acers Helios 500, which offered a G-Sync display supporting 108% of the sRGB color gamut, falls below other competitors offering 131%. Compared to the Acer, screens on the Alienware (110%), PowerSpec (119%) and Aorus (122%) are a lot more colorful.

The Helios 500’s brightness is slightly lower, averaging 276 nits. It falls below the average in its category at 281 nits, and noticeably behind two competitors at 352 and 372 nits. And the Aorus had the dimmest display, at 243 nits.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Prepare to take flight with this wave of comfort that comes from the keyboard. The font, which feels like it could have come from a Nintendo 64 Superman game (yes, a good thing)

I beat my typical 60-wpm typing rate by nailing 65 words each minute on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, fulfilling your 1.6mm key travel and 70 grams of actuation force standards and beating everyone else in this article with a score of over 50%!

Acer has improved their keyboard with additional five hot keys. The left side of the keyboard has three different group sets on it for a total of 15 customizable keys.

The 4.1 x 2.4-inch touchpad is quite smooth, and its two separate mouse buttons are clicky and responsive. However, the bar that separates the button and the touchpad feels flimsy. The touchpad did register all of Windows 10 gestures including two finger scrolling and three finger software switching

Audio

The Predator Helios 500’s two speakers and subwoofer whipped up a ferocious roar as Quinn XCII performed Straightjacket. The opening to the song produced sick drumbeats and electric keyboard rhythms which embraced this particular rhythm of bass. When the chorus hit, each track blossomd, weaving treble and bass together in an attempt to entice me in.

The sound of the controller hitting my wheelchair’s creeks made me feel immersed as I hunted through this world. Music filled with epic notes pulled me to different levels and made the game more challenging.

The Predator’s sound system includes a full equalizer and various presets such as Gaming, Movies, Music, and Voice.

Gaming, Graphics and VR

We tested the Helios 500, which features an overclockable Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8GB of VRAM. With its Predator lineage in mind, I ran Wolfenstein II at Mein leben! settings and it performed wonderfully–the CPU didn t even stutter when I was shot to death on a conveyor belt.

The Helios 500 and PowerSpec ran at the same performance on Rise of the Tomb Raider on HIGH settings. The two, however, both fared below Alienware’s (GTX 1080) 68-fps average and Aorus’ (GTX 1080) 73-fps average.

Rocking an overclockable Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8GB of VRAM, the Helios 500 ripped through Wolfenstein II at 160 fps. Taking its Predator lineage to heart, it is easily one of the best laptops for gaming on a budget.

The Helios 500 averaged 103 fps on the Hitman test (Ultra, 1080p), which beat the competition. Other models only managed a 60-fps average, including the PowerSpec and Alienware desktops.

The Predator hit 57 fps on the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark, landing near to, but lower than, the PowerSpec’s 60 fps.

The Acer Predator Helios 500 leaves a 10.5 out of 11 in the SteamVR Performance Test; this places it slightly above the average for that category, but nowhere near as strong as some of its competition.

Performance

This rig has gone out to kill using its overclockable 2.9-GHz Intel Core i9-8950HK processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and 2TB 5400rpm HDD.

For the Geekbench 4 efficiency test, the Helios 500 scored 19,896 points which eclipses the PowerSpec 14,138 (Core i7-7700HQ) and a premium-gaming-laptop average of 18,043. The Alienware Core i9-8950HK also scored 20,890 and in contrast the A

The Helios 500’s 512GB SSD copied 4.97GB of multimedia files in 13 seconds, which meant 391 megabytes per second. It matched the PowerSpec but was slower than the Aorus (424MBps) and the 471-MBps average The Alienware’s SSD hit a read and write score of 565 MBps.

on the HandBrake test, it took 9:33 for this computer to process an HD video from 4K. That’s slightly faster than the average of 9:59. The laptop finished ahead of both the Alienware and Aorus but lagged behind on a separate benchmark that attempted to measure how long it took a computer to render large image

Battery Life

When I surfed the internet over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, my battery lasted only 2 hours and 36 minutes. That runtime is 29 percent less than the average for laptops that can thrive on our power. The Aorus has a 2:20 battery life while the Alienware lasted 3:47. PowerSpec, however, is most certainly champion with its 6:15 battery life.

Webcam

I was disappointed with what I got for the price. The 720p webcam produced noisy images and the color was never right-my light blue shirt would look more like a dull gray.

The webcam is grainy even with a light in front of me; I recommend getting an external webcam for streaming.

Heat

Regardless of the name, any gaming notebook could be a predator if they are loaded with enough hardware. Exterior temperatures my change with time, it would — most probably not be as quick as inside. The keyboard was at 101 degrees, while the touchpad reached 83 degrees.
The latest part hit 105 degrees, which is positioned on the proper underside nearby the hinge and corresponds to an area interaction within gaming is less probable.

The Predator Helios 500 is aptly named, and embodies this predator perfectly when you are a discreet and cool killer.

The PC remained cool without gaming as well following streaming of a 15-minute video. The Helios 500 was at lower 90 degrees, the guts of keyboard at 91 degrees and the touchpad 80 degrees.

Software and Warranty

One of the cooler features of Acer’s Predator Helios 500–predator sense. It can control CPU and GPU use, assign customized backlighting, monitor fans, manage overclocks, customize settings to specific games. Additionally, the QuarterMaster app is used to customize any peripherals, while the Acer Care Center offers tools such as system checkups and tune ups. Configurations

I tested the Predator Helios 500 which has an Intel Core i9-8950HK processor, 16GB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8GB of RAM.

Bottom Line

From tearing benchmarks limb from limb with its powerful Core i9 processor and Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card, the Helios 500 looks ready to roar! With a core i9 processor, Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics and the power to rock your socks off with its speakers. Even so, this machine has plenty of drawbacks. For one, the display is subpar.
