The P-45 and the P (Portable) keyboards are Yamaha’s response to Casio’s Privia line of pianos.

The P-45 has the cheapest weighted hammer action keys of all Yamaha pianos.

The Yamaha piano is increasingly popular with amateurs and intermediate players because of its simplicity and competitive price, not to mention the quality and realism of its models.

The P-45 replaces the prior P35, and includes some significant changes including an increased polyphony amount and improved button samples.

Yamaha has also released a version of their Amazon Exclusive P71 piano, which we ll speak about briefly in the review (Summary section).

Yamaha p-45 is an 88 key keyboard with built-in speakers. The piano is a hybrid of the P35’s lightweight design and its predecessor, which also features 88 keys to match.

You can easily fit the P-45 in smaller spaces, and it looks nice with any interior styles.

The Yamaha P-45s are 52.2 inches wide, 11.6 inches deep and 6 inches high. These keyboards weigh only 25 pounds and can be carried by a single person easily.

For musicians on-the-go and anyone who appreciates mobility, the piano will be a great choice. The instrument conveniently fits most cars which means it can easily be taken to gigs or on the highway.

It s a full-size instrument, so it can t be taken on planes or trains.

Anyhow, before you travel with your piano, I recommend the purchase of a padded keyboard bag to protect your instrument during long/frequent trips.

The size of the Yamaha P-45 is dwarfed by these other electric pianos:

The keyboard doesn’t have a stand. You can put it anywhere on any table but you may want to buy an optional X-type stand or the L85 furniture stand if you need the piano to not move around.

In the Accessories section, we’ll talk more about this key symbol that’s found on Yamaha pianos.

The control panel on the P-45 is simple and straightforward. The only controls you’ll find are two buttons and a volume dial.

The Power button turns the instrument on and off, whereas the Function button titled “Grand piano” can be used to access the Grand Piano sound as well as a variety of other features.

If you’d like to access different features including scales and metronome, you will need to simultaneously press the Function button along with a specific piano key (which has an icon above).

The way its keys are laid out is common in entry-level keyboards.

The P-45 is only available in black.

The P-45 features a conventional 88-key keyboard, called Graded Hammer Standard (GHS).

This is Yamaha’s least expensive hammer-action digital piano, typically available in their entry-level instruments. The key feel and action are nearly identical to that of an acoustic piano.

The keyboard replicates the feel of an acoustic piano with hammers.

The GHS action has a heavy touch in the reduced end and lighter touch in the high quality similar to an acoustic piano.

The keys on the keyboard are touch sensitive, so the sound produced varies depending on the velocity of your playing.

This digital piano features a touch-sensitivity setting, so you can personalize the way it feels while playing. You are able to choose between 4 preset settings: fixed, soft, medium (default) and hard.

The Fixed setting means that the keyboard is not touch sensitive. It’s always loud, no matter how hard or soft you play the keys.

The Hard setting provides the widest dynamic range, where you will need to strike the keys very hard in order to produce loud sounds.

Though some models of the P-45 digital piano have keytops that are designed to replicate the feel of Ebony and Ivory, this is not a part of all models.

The black keys of P-45 have a matte finish preventing the fingers from slipping off them if they become moist.

I personally didn t have a problem with the glossy keys because many acoustic pianos, including Yamaha s own line, are constructed using these same keys.

Finally, another note is that Yamaha s GHS action can be somewhat less noisy (noticeable at low volume or in headphones), when compared to Casio s Tri-sensor hammer action. However, for realism, Casios accordion style of sensors may offer the better feel than the Yamaha NPD type sensor design.

If you want to accurately capture the sound of an acoustic piano, Yamaha employs its AWM dynamic sampling technology.

What you ll hear with the P45 is a genuine stereo sound recorded
