Sennheiser s HD selection of headphones is packed with superstars, from the classic HD 650 to the brand new budget HD 518. With all open-back models looking a bit too similar for our liking, we decided to also try out one closed-back model: the majestic 1000 HD 800 that s. In 1982, these emperors of the number appeared to have been transported from a sci-fi future. The sound is so precise that it might have already been crafted with lasers.

A grand may seem like a lot, but the Sennheiser HD 800 is well worth the investment. These are Sennheiser’s top-of-the-line headphones, and their appearance is designed to prove that. One model down, the HD 650 has a simple but still lavish design that can accommodate larger ears without being extravagant about it. Unfortunately, the Sennheiser HD 800 is a less flexible option. These silver and black beauties sit atop your ears like props from a sci-fi movie, waiting to open a wormhole between your head and wherever you please.

Instead of looking like a traditional headphone, they were rather unusual. In addition to the wood around the headband, they have a black grille protecting their open-back speaker so while traditional in function, they look more technologically advanced than other headphones. With a design that conjures memories of films like Blade Runner and The Fifth Element, this is sure to please.

One of the most surprising features I ve found on this headphone is that even though it looks like metal, for a good portion of it s construction, it is actually plastic. That is standard for the HD family, and the materials used are of excellent quality, but plastic lacks that ooh-inducing quality a metal patterned device could summon.

The Sennheiser HD800 headphones are surprisingly lightweight and large. The wooden Grado GS1000i are lighter still, however, the design of the Sennheisers edges them for comfort both if you have a strong preference for these types of phones or your love and understand them from their use in other models.

The HD 800 by Sennheiser comes with a detachable, thick cable which is very much like the other models in their series. A fresh one can cost you around $180, a testament to the ultra-high quality of every component of the package. The cable is 3 meters long, so be cautious if your pets or you’re a fan of whizzing around on wheeled office chairs and snag it.

The cable leads to a gold plated, 6.3mm jack protected by an extended metal sleeve. While no 3.5mm converter is provided, it would be a bad idea for these headphones to need one due to their enormous size and weight combined with the attractiveness of their exposed cords and connectors.

Sennheiser HD 800 are headphones for use with a headphone amp. They’re open-back, which means they’re suited to indoors use in a quiet environment and not for outdoor use.

Open-backed headphones usually do not shield you from the noises of the exterior world, and also broadcast whatever being played through them to any individuals nearby. Pay attention with your Sennheiser HD 800 in comfort from your living room, not on a seat on the train for all our sakes.

No accessories are included with the Sennheiser HD 800, but they come elegantly packaged. And given you’ll have just spent around 1,000 for the privilege, we don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Of course, if Sennheiser thinks it could dupe us into thinking the HD 800 are dead good with only fancy box and esoteric design, it has one more thing coming.

Predictably, the Sennheiser HD 800 sound absolutely fantastic. They are some of the absolute best headphones money can purchase.

The sound is carved out of a good block of marble, as though done with lasers by those robotic arms in car adverts. Although this might cause criticism among some listeners that they are too cold and clinical sounding, Sennheiser HD 800 don’t have the same problem most other headphones do: lacking bass.

The HD 800’s clarity and precise edge are a real draw – despite the close competition from Grado GS1000i. However, when it comes to bass response, the HD800 lacks that robust low-end which can be found at a typical movie explosion scene. though the 800s’ bass extension is great, they’re never warm

Sennheiser’s HD 800 headphones produce a wider soundstage than their competitors, like the Grado GS1000i and HiFiMAN’s HE-series headphones. What makes the Sennheiser HD 800 so successful is how it enables listeners to experience a sense of detail comparable to speakers with the clarity and contrast you would expect from headphones.

Those who like open-backed headphones will also love the Sennheiser HD 800. The sound quality is so breathtaking that it can’t be described as “open.” Few headphones do justice to the sound of an orchestra in its complexity. Sennheiser HD 800s, however, are among the few that excel at separating high frequencies and lows to make complex orchestral music come alive. Some people may find the HD 800’s lack of bass dissatisfying.

The Grado PS1000 are masters at making music sound bigger than life, with a lively, bassier sound that captures excitement and the vivid color of the music wherever it wanders. The Sennheiser HD 800 provide a close 1:1 representation of how they look on paper. These headphones are great for those who tell the truth, and for listeners who like to weave a story out of what they hear. Can you handle the truth?

Verdict

The Sennheiser HD 800 are some of the most accurate and insightful headphones we’ve ever experienced. They allow for music to sound as though it’s coming from speakers close by, which is more than can be said for many other sets on the market.

These headphones are also immensely comfortable, and even if you don’t entirely love their futuristic silver design, the giant size and appearance might not bother you.
