The HD 558 is very similar to the other Sennheiser headphones in their new line up of models; the HD 518 and the HD 598. They are crafted from materials that aren’t luxurious, but they do offer good sound quality and comfort.

The two ear pads of these headphones are lined with soft, very comfortable velour, and so is the headband. The leather trimming of the HD 598 is absent in this case, but then again they’re similarly comfy to wear for an entire day apiece without even a hint of discomfort. The ear pads fit comfortably and stay in place, even when I move or dance around, and the 260g weight is perfect for a full size pair.

The large cups surround your ears, so if you have on particularly small lobes the HD 558 should not touch your head. Like Sennheiser s other over-the-ear models, the headband is manually adjustable, clicking into place at defined increments. It does not manually adjust to your mind size.

The Sennheiser HD 558 is a beautifully designed headphone with an unobtrusive oval speaker grille and silver trim. The design of the HD 558 is similar to the HD 518, but without the slats at the back. The headphones largely appear to be tough and not at all creaky. The trunk grille does flex somewhat under pressure, but the construction is otherwise top-notch.

The cable comes out of the left side of the headphones and is removable. There are two 2.5mm jacks that come with a fastener in case you step on the wire to your speaker too many times in one spot. Cables are designed to only be used for under 15.

The 3m cable leads to a full-size 6.3mm jack, but a 3.5mm converter is bundled with the package. This tacked-on, the headset housing becomes huge again reinforcing that this can be an at-home set instead of only one to wear outside and about

If you do opt to take the Sennheiser HD 558 out with you, passers-by should be able to hear what you’re hearing as they’re open back headphones. The perforated grill of every cup leaks sound and in addition implies that they offer barely any isolation from the noise of the exterior world. Headphones don’t work too well when you’re on public transport.

As the at-home set, they sound utterly brilliant. With an extensive, smooth and balanced sound, they are able to handle all genres of music and delight your ear. They trade away a number of the bass thickness from the CHEAPER HD 518 set, but in return provide superior separation and dynamics as well as a stronger mid- Adjusting to a different musical approach with more open-sounding, detailed treble while still allowing bass notes to be heard has not been easy.

To progress sound within Sennheiser’s HD range, one must typically upgrade to the HD 600/650. With them comes more musicality and greater dynamics. That said, the 558 still gives pleasing to discerning ears.

These lower-end 5** models also use lower-impedance 50Ohm drivers, instead of the 300ohm 6-series models.

For people who care about detail and balance, the AKG K271 MKII might be a sensible choice. For bass lovers, Ultrasone HFI-680 is another option to consider. These fairly neutral-sounding headphones have no issue switching between rock and classical tracks, making them a versatile choice for late night TV or movie watching.
