Lenovo ThinkPad T470 price and configuration options

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 starts at $919 for the notebook computer with a Core i5-7200U, and it comes in low-res. Our analysis configuration (bought from CDW) had an HD display screen, Core i5-7200U CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB PCIe SSD. allows you to configure the T470, selecting its processor chip (i5 or i7), RAM, hard drive storage space, battery life and potency of display resolution. Further specifications are also optional but we recommend 6-cell 1080p non-touch screen for best performance without sacrificing size.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 design

The ThinkPad T470 features the same black, elegant design as other Lenovo ThinkPads, but with one difference. The lid and sides are covered in luxuriously soft-touch material that is darker than usual and reminiscent of the Beyond X1. This laptop would be a great choice for someone who needs something powerful with an intent to upgrade in the future.

Compared to the previous ThinkPad T460, it is noticeably lighter with an additional battery unit (which can add about one pound and less than an inch in height). The laptop’s lid is constructed of a combination of plastic and magnesium. The screen type you choose determines whether the lid is made from glass reinforced plastic or magnesium metal hybrid.

At 4 pounds, the Dell Latitude 5480 is heavier than the AsusCompact B9440 which weighs in at 2.4 pounds and has 0.6 inches of thickness. The more expensive ThinkPad X1 Carbon weighs just 2.49 pounds and is thinner at 0.3 inches thick The Lenovo ThinkPad 13 weighs 3.17 pounds.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 ports

The ThinkPad T470 has every connection a productivity user could want. A Thunderbolt 3 port enables users to hook up a whole universe of high-acceleration peripherals, including general chargers and docking stations. Lenovo protects your device from power surges by employing anti-fry technology. We evaluated the PowerGear USB-C charger with a Lenovo ThinkPad T470, and we had no issues.

On the left side of the T470, you will find a Thunderbolt 3 port that connects to my computer with USB and Lenovo’s traditional power connector. Best Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Laptop

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 strength and security

The ThinkPad T470 is designed to use material that can withstand harsh conditions such as extreme temperatures, shocks and vibrations.

Built to meet the needs of corporate IT departments, the ThinkPad T470 comes with dTPM encryption as well as, if you purchase it bundled with a Core i5-7300U or Core i7-7600U CPU, vPro remote management. The laptop also comes with an optional fingerprint reader.

The ThinkPad T470 has every connection that a productivity user could want.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 display

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T470 has a 14-inch, 1920 x 1080 touch screen. When I viewed the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, fine details such as the hairs in Chris Hemsworth’s beard and the lines in Jeff Goldblum’s forehead were pronounced. The laptop’s colors were mostly accurate, but not too lively. Although your computer can be purchased with a 1366×768 display, we recommend that you get the 1080p panel we tested because it will let you fit more content on the screen at once.

When it comes to color, the T470 s display covers only 73% of the sRGB gamut–a figure that’s lower than the average for 14-inch laptops (91%). You can find other notebooks with more robust screens in this price range, but this is an area where Lenovo has shown improvement in recent years. Nevertheless, the AsusPro B9440 and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon both offer a vivid screen capable of presenting over 100% of the gamut.

The Latitude 5480’s display remained to participate in 2.1 Delta-E error rating (0 is much better) and higher than the class average of 2.2, as well as ThinkPad X1 Carbon that had a Delta-E error rating 4.4 and AsusPro B9440 having an ETA of 6.7.

The T470’s screen is not as bright and color saturation starts to fade outside of a 45 degree viewing angle. Although this is not an issue when looking directly at the screen, it becomes clear from a distance. The display on the Lenovo ThinkPad T470 measures 234 nits of brightness, which is below the average. However, it is brighter than its competitors, which measured at 202 and 243 nits respectively.

The ThinkPad T470 might be a good choice for typists because of its keyboard.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 audio

The Lenovo ThinkPad T470 has ample volume from its front-mounted speakers to fill a small conference room with sound. Performance for multimedia is less than stellar, though When I listened to Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, the drums sounded so hard it felt like my eardrum was poked with a sharp object.

On the other hand, there was a noticeable separation of sound with vocals on one side and instruments and drums on the other. Both guitar and drums on Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water were tinny, but Patrice Rushen’s Neglected Me Nots had smooth bass that was appropriate for her style.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 keyboard, touchpad and trackpoint

If you’re a serious typist, Lenovo ThinkPad T470 may be worth considering for its keyboard alone. I have never come across such an easy typing experience on any laptop tested so far this year. The key’s 2mm of deep travel (between 1.5 and 2mm is typical) and solid 70g of actuation force make the keys a pleasure to type on. I averaged 107 words per minute on 10FastFingers typing test, which beats my usual score by quite a bit. The keyboard has enough brightness to shine in both high and low light conditions.

Like all ThinkPads, the T470 includes both a TrackPoint and a buttonless touchpad. I much prefer the TrackPoint because it allows me to navigate around the desktop flawlessly without lifting my hands off of the home row.

However, I appreciated the 3.9 x 2.7-inch touchpad which was responsive to Windows gestures such as three finger swipe and pinch to zoom in use of my own tests The left click provided the perfect amount of feedback.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 performance

Using its seventh-generation Kaby Lake Core i5-7200U CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB PCIe SSD, our examine configuration of the ThinkPad T470 offers plenty of pop for serious efficiency and heavy multitasking.

The T470 received an acceptable 6,739 on Geekbench 4, a man-made benchmark that measures efficiency. This number is less than the ThinkPad 13 with an i3 processor (5,488) but slightly more efficient than the Dell Latitude 5480 with a Core i7 7600U (8,999). The AsusPro B9440 also has a Core i5-7200U battery and scored much more highly (7,297).

Lenovos new 4-pound laptop has been designed to take your workload and help you fly through even the most complex tasks.

Look for more tips on how to write with clear language in our Advanced Writing Guide! The Latitude and X1 Carbon models were both between 40 to 50 seconds quicker.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T470’s 256GB PCIe SSD copied 4.97GB of files in only 19 seconds, a speed of 267.8 MBps. That s faster than the average for this category and much faster than many competitive laptops such as the Latitude 5480 (137.5 MBps).

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 graphics

Rather than playing expensive games, you can use the ThinkPad T470 s Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU to watch movies and edit photographs. The ThinkPad T470 scored 62,912 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a synthetic check that measures graphics prowess. That’s just below the Latitude 5480 (73,623), the AsusPro B9440 (69,585) and the X1 Carbon (68,082).

When we tested the T470 with Dirt 3, it was able to maintain a solid 48 fps. That’s well ahead of the category average of 44 and many other laptops we compared it to.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 battery life

With an extended battery, the Lenovo ThinkPad T470 lasted 17 hours and 25 minutes in Notebook Mag’s Battery Check. But the T470 s 8 hours and 39 minutes was roughly a half hour shorter than most of its competitors.
The keyboard is plush and well-spaced, offering an excellent tactile experience.

Like other ThinkPads, the T470 offers Lenovo’s PowerBridge battery program, which features both an interior 3-cell battery as well as your choice of a removable 3- or 6-cell battery. If you decide to bring a spare electric battery, you can swap it in without actually turning off the computer. However, if you purchase the six-cell battery, and do not need to carry an external battery.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 webcam

The ThinkPad T470 s built-in 720p webcam captured shaky, blurry images of my face.

The T470 is not immune to Windows 10 bloatware. It includes Candy Crush Soda Saga, March of Empires, Sling TV and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition in addition to a tile that causes the Asphalt 8 site in the Windows shop and preloads of Microsoft Sudoku and Solitaire.

Lenovo laptop has a typical one-year depot warranty, which addresses the delivery costs if you want to send in the computer for repairs. To find out about Lenovo support and repair, see how they fared within our Tech Support Showdown and Best and Worst Brands Rankings.

Bottom line

Have a few hundred dollars to spare in your budget, and need your laptop to last longer on a single charge? The ThinkPad T470 is the perfect choice for you. And if carrying it around becomes too difficult, the lighter 2.5-pound ThinkPad X1 Carbon should serve you just as well without all of those ports we talked about If you have a budget, the ThinkPad T530 is available for $200 and has similar configuration. The only difference is that it won’t last as long on wireless battery power and has smaller screen size.

The ThinkPad T470 is one of the best laptops Lenovo has made, with a good screen and sturdy design.
