Design

Lenovo Legion Y720 Laptop Review The lid of Lenovo’s Legion Y720 offers a standard logo in the left-hand corner with its own red, Y-series branding as well. The look would be mediocre and bland were it not for the large pattern on the very top that really feels like something you d find on a thick, stubborn flannel shirt. I remember seeing a few of the students in my senior high school wearing this pattern at some point, those who dressed head to toe in all black and listened incessantly to My Chemical Romance on loop on their iPod minis. No one I showed this design to had anything positive to state about it.

Along the surface are two black metal speakers with a red underlay that provide the laptop an aggressive, angular look.

The inside is just a little better. Lifting the lid reveals a 15.6-inch display with an aluminum chassis, surrounded by a thick bezel and red accenting.

Currently, the Y720 laptop is heavier than the majority of its competitors. Weighing in at 6.8 pounds and measuring 15 x 10.9 x 1.1 inches, it’s notably bigger than the other models we reviewed: such as the Acer Predator Helios 3000 (5.5 lbs., 15 x 10 5×1 4 in

You’ll appreciate the Legion has ports just for your gaming accessories and even VR. On its left side are a lock slot, an Ethernet port, audio jack or two, USB 3.0 ports, and a headphone jack. The right side by comparison includes Thunderbolt 3 port, mini DisplayPort outlet two-three USB 3.0 ports plus You might miss the Sdcard slot simply for productivity.

Display

The Legion Y720’s 15.6-inch, 1080p display is dim and bland. The first thing I did when I acquired this notebook was to try to increase the brightness further but it goes only so high. When I watched the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, the Asgardian’s scarlet cape appeared a darker shade of crimson than I could even see stubble on the Hulk’s aged chin.

The display was not one of the brightest on the MBA and only reached 210 nits with our light meter. This is below average (271 nits) and similar to that of both Predator laptops we analyzed (226). The Prestige, however, measured at 192 nits.

When I jumped right into a battle in Mass Effect Andromeda, the brightest setting was still not enough, and colors needed to be stronger.

The screen covers 73% of the sRGB color gamut, which is behind close to average (95%), and opposition like the Predator (81%), Origin (118%), and Prestige (133%).

The display on the Legion also boasts an impressive delta-E score of 0.2 (0 is ideal), tying Origin’s 0.2 and outdoing Predator’s 4.7 and Prestige’s 5 for commonality with the average laptop.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Legion’s keyboard isn’t winning any awards for being the best, but it gets the job done. The keys require 75 grams of pressure to press down (between 1.5 and 2mm is average), and they feel stiff at first with a small range of motion. I took the 10fastfingers.com typing test and reached 111 words each minute, with a 3 percent error rate. The keyboard is utterly silent, however, the spacebar makes a squeaky sound.

The RGB backlighting on the Legion Y720 is great and I think all gaming laptops should have that at this point. While we’re not able to customize individual keys, it does allow for personal control over lighting by zones, and most only offer red lighting at a comparable price as of now. You can customize the settings via Lenovo’s Nerve Sense gaming system. For instance, instead of a regular Windows key, there is an instantly-accessible video recording button to capture your best gameplay moments.

The touchpad is one of the best features on this laptop, with instant, unmistakable gesture recognition and the perfect amount of willingness when it responds. I’m also happy Lenovo put a standard touchpad rather than a weird trapezoidal one from small Legion laptops.

Audio

One of the Legion’s best features is its speakers, which can be found on the laptop’s bottom-facing side and underside.

Discussions

When I played Mass Effect Andromeda, the gunshots and quiet footsteps were audible. Radio communications with teammates were crystal clear.

Legion includes Dolby Audio with preset profiles for different media, but the default setting is good across the board.

Gaming, Graphics, and VR

Legion s Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is powerful enough to play games at high settings.
When I started Mass Effect Andromeda and jumped into the game’s first battle, I noticed that graphics on my 1080p screen were noticeably unstable – kicking between 46-70 fps as I utilized jump jets.
In addition, there was some visible tearing in the When I adjusted the laptop to lower settings, it could maintain a steady framerate of 66-70 frames per second without tearing.

The Legion underperformed in our Tomb Raider benchmark, running at 35 frames-per-second when other models could reach 36 fps, the standard. The Foundation and Prestige performed even worse.

The Legion earned a score of 6.7 on the SteamVR Performance Test, rendering it ready for VR. The common is 5.7, and the Predator scored 7.1 with similar GPU performance.

The Lenovo Legion Y720 includes an Xbox wireless adapter built-in, so I was able to play without any configuration. You can pair an older Xbox One controller with Windows 10 in the same way you would a non-Bluetooth device.

Performance

Lenovo’s Legion Y720 can come with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB 5400 RPM HDD. Just to illustrate my point: I had 30 tabs open in Chrome, one of which was streaming 1080p footage from the game Overwatch on YouTube and downloading a game from EA Origin at the same time and didn’t notice any lag. However, when we ran our benchmark suite, opponents outperformed Lenovo’s laptop.

On the Geekbench 4 Efficiency Test, the Legion earned a score of 12,169. This merges below the mainstream laptop typical (10,546) but surpasses marks for foundations (12,208), Prestige and Predator ranges with Core i5-7300HQ) and Core i7-7700HQ models).

The Legion is a capable workhorse, but it scored lower than the average for our OpenOffice spreadsheet test. Specifically, it took five minutes and 19 seconds to pair 20,000 names and addresses inside our OpenOffice spreadsheet test. That’s slower compared to the average (4:12), Prestige (3:39), Origin (3:38

The Legion s performance lags behind that of the Predator, Prestige, and Origin.

Battery Life

The Lenovo Legion endured 6 hours and 19 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test, which browses the Wi-Fi internet consistently. That is solid for a gaming laptop, but only the Predator (6:48) had a higher successful run. The Lenovo Legion Y720 is a top-rank gaming laptop and has an above-average battery life of about 4 hours.

Heat

The Legion Y720 stays cool under normal conditions. After streaming a quarter-hour of HD video from YouTube, it measured 82 degrees Fahrenheit on underneath, 82 degrees between your G and H keys, and 79 degrees on the touchpad. This device falls below our 95-degree comfort threshold.

Playing a game on this computer caused the keyboard to reach 108 degrees, the touchpad to be 81 degrees, and underneath to be 114.

Webcam

Despite its disappointing camera, the Legion is a budget-friendly option for work or school due to its strong 450 nit Full HD display and nimble 8th Gen Intel Core Processor.

Software and Warranty

Lenovo Legion Y720 Signature Edition: With the Legion, Lenovo continues its longstanding tradition of including just a small software, which I believe pays off. There’s the Companion application, that makes it simple to keep your pc up-to-date and check its diagnostics; as the Settings app enables you to have a deep dive into camera settings and network Lenovo’s gaming app, Nerve Sense managed keyboard backlighting and features user-defined control of fan speed. It also lists specs for the machine.

The free Lenovo apps include Candy Crush Soda Saga, March of Empires: War of Lords, Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, and Twitter.

Lenovo introduced “Legion” devices which will use the Lenovo Entertainment Hub software to view movies in a VR theater and upscale traditional games for VR. The Lenovo Legion Y720 laptop has yet to be announced by the company, although we know that it is coming.

Lenovo provides the Legion with a one-year warranty. Lenovo performs best inside our Tech Support Showdown, in which they ranked as the number two provider out of 22 providers, and is also ranked as number 17 out of 34 brands on our Best and Worst Gaming Laptop Brands ranking.

The cheapest Lenovo Legion Y720 model, with a Core i5-7300HQ CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 1TB HDD costs $1,029.59. The most expensive option is $1,529.99 and includes the Core i7-7700HQ processor with 16 GB of RAM and extra storage space for games.

Lenovo has a number of configurations to choose from and allows customers to configure it the way they want.

Bottom Line

The Lenovo Legion Y720 laptop is a gaming notebook computer with loud and proud speakers. It also has some cool innovations such as native support for wireless Xbox One controllers.

But, regardless if you can overlook the ugly lid design, the display is dimmer than rivals and the SSD is not especially fast. When storage needs are more modest, at $1,099.99 Acer Predator Helios 300 offers otherwise-identical specs and performed better on our tests including productivity and battery life. Lenovo Legion laptops are also easy to upgrade with quick-access panels for swapping out the memory and hard drive.
