Design: Sleek

Yes, Lenovo 120S IdeaPad is affordable. Nevertheless, it doesn’t look cheap. Bearing a grey chassis with a matte finish, the IdeaPad 120S could almost fool you into thinking it s crafted from aluminum. The IdeaPad s polycarbonate and ABS plastic design is a balance between durable chassis and breathable typists.

Lenovo’s latest IdeaPad iteration sports a silver Lenovo logo interrupting the design. This laptop offers an island-style backlit keyboard, 13-inch display with black bezels (which can also flip 360 degrees), and gray physical buttons at the bottom of the touchpad on a matching charcoal background. The hinge on the Lenovo Ideapad can rotate back to almost 180 degrees, but I would advise against using pressure with this model. Furthermore, the rubber grips in the bottom of my laptop slid across my desk too easily.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 120S is a slim and lightweight standard 13″ laptop that measures 13.14 x 9.25 x 0.73 inches and weighs 3 pounds, making it practical for everyday use at home or on the go while traveling

For under $300, the IdeaPad 120S may not have all of the ports you see in nicer laptops, but it still has enough to get some basic work done. On its left side there s a proprietary charging port (which can charge the laptop), a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI output and two USB Type-C connectors (

The IdeaPad 120S 14-inch screen contains a 1366 x 768 resolution, meaning the picture quality is not as sharp as it could be. It fell short of meeting the industry average for color reproduction, coming in at 69 percent of the sRGB gamut. Lenovo’s IdeaPad 100S-14 was the most vibrant of the sub-$200 laptops that we tested (84 percent). The Asus L402SA and HP Stream also had better showings.

The IdeaPad 120S, to my regret, provides a mixed experience for viewing. Colors are somewhat muted, though I can’t say they are overtly dim. Some lighter colors looked washed out. The multicolored walls in the backdrop looked a bit under-saturated, and CL’s blue contacts were rendered as grey. Dark shades like those found in Park Bom’s hair—black and violet—looked good on screen. I was also pleased by the IdeaPad’s clarity, considering that that is a lower-res screen. I could absolutely tell the tufts of fur in Minzy’s pink sweater and the Jeremy Scott print on Sandara’s blue shirt.

The IdeaPad 120S’s screen performed better inside our brightness test, registering 219 nits on our light meter. While this score surpassed the category average (254 nits) it did not come close to the performance we observed from other laptops in its class including the Lenovo IdeaPad 100s-14 (188 nits), the Asus L402SA

The IdeaPad 120S panel did not handle glare well in the sun. It also exhibited narrow viewing angles; picture quality is diminished when anything other than 90 degrees of viewing angle are reached. The viewing angles were fine when viewed from the front and to the left.

The IdeaPad 120S includes two speakers that provide moderate audio output. When we listened to semiaccurate tracks, there was enough sound to fill our small conference room. When I listened to Call Me Baby by EXO, the bass was prominent in the track with few noticeable distortions. The percussion had a tinny sound and strings were nearly inaudible. However, the vocals came through clearly without any distortion.

The IdeaPad 120S naturally comes with a microphone, which is located at the top bezel. For testing purposes, I recorded some audio that came out crisp and clear on playback.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The island-style keyboard on the IdeaPad 120S is just a little shallow, providing only 1.2 millimeters of travel (1.5 to 2 mm is typical). The keys require 69 grams of actuation force (65 to 70 grams is typical), which gave them a responsive feel, but our results were mixed. As of the 10fastfingers.com typing test, my speed decreased by approximately 22 percent (45 wpm) and editor found the keyboard quite nice-Hit 95 words per minute on average-close to his typical score which is 97.

The IdeaPad’s buttonless, 4.1 x 2.7-inch touchpad is indeed smooth it borders on slippery. The touchpad responded accurately to navigation commands and took care of pinch-to-zoom and three finger swipe gestures immediately.

Performance: Solid

Lenovo IdeaPad 120s device offers powerful processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC storage drive providing a strong performance inside our tests.

The IdeaPad 120S Intel Celeron N3350 CPU scored 2,626 on Geekbench 4, a synthetic benchmark that measures efficiency. That showing exceeded the scores we saw from the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14 (1,880), the Asus L402SA (1,934) and the HP Stream 14 (1,8

The IdeaPad 120S copied a 4.97GB batch of multimedia files in 1 minute and 28 seconds for an interest rate of 57.8 megabytes per second. The hard drive speed is much faster than the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14 s 43.5 MBps (1 minute and 47 seconds), the Asus L402SA s sluggish

The Lenovo Ideapad 120s completed the OpenOffice Macro test in 9 minutes and 41 seconds. This is faster than other laptops we have looked at, including the IdeaPad 100S-14 (14 minutes and 33 seconds) , Asus L402SA (13 minutes and 15 seconds), and HP Stream 14 (13 minues 04 secnts

The IdeaPad 120S fared well on the Ice Storm Unlimited test, scoring a 19,827.

The IdeaPad 120s is a slightly better performer on the graphics tests than its competitors. It performed at a rate of 24.5 frames per second in our race condition testing, falling just short of the 30 frames recommend by most gaming professionals as adequate for playability.

Battery Life: Beats your competition

At less than $300, this IdeaPad provides up to 12 hours of battery life, giving you the ultimate balance between portability and productivity.

Overall we rank the Lenovo IdeaPad 120S at 4 out of 5 stars.

Heat: Cool

Lenovo s IdeaPad 120S stayed cool during our heat test, with the touchpad measuring 75 degrees Fahrenheit and keyboard (G and H keys) registering 82 degrees following a full-screen video playback. These results passed our heat test with flying colors, as we consider temperatures above 95 degrees to be unappealing.

Webcam: Poor

The IdeaPad 120S features a low-quality webcam, which is disappointing but unsurprising.

When I took a selfie beneath the fluorescent lighting in my office, my features were hard to make out because of the heavy grain. Colors were also off making my chocolate-brown sweater appear black and my tan skin appear bruised with gray tint.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 120S is best used for making video calls when handled by a specialist setting. If you buy this laptop, you’re better off investing the money saved in an external webcam.

Software and Warranty

The 120s features a clean, minimalistic version of Windows 10. First-party utilities and bloatware, such as Lenovo Companion, Lenovo Settings, and Lenovo Services make the device user-friendly for those who want to customize their experience. The Lenovo also includes a couple of preinstalled games, such as Minecraft, Candy Crush Soda Saga and Bubble Witch Saga.

Bottom Line

Lenovo’s best IdeaPad is a bit of an oddity. It features Intel Celeron N3350 CPU, USB Type-C support and good battery life for the asking price. But it also comes with poor displays and sound systems, as well as a fragile frame that flexes too easily under pressure.
