Design

The Jaybird Freedom headphones take a completely different approach to connecting your music.

The Freedom headphones have the battery in a relatively bulky remote control. This enables them to be extremely small, which is comfortable and fits well.

But the Freedoms could be too small because of their own good, and here’s why. While moving the battery to the remote has cut battery life significantly, at 4 hours it is not as long-lasting as other cordless earphones whose advertised battery lives are 8 or more hours.

Jaybird includes a battery power that extends playback time another four hours, but you will have to manage carrying around a battery power.

The Freedom s small earbuds also made fitment a pain for me personally. I experienced every earbud combination, however the earbuds were constantly falling out of my ears in large clumps. It wasn’t until I added the stabilizing wings that the earbuds finally stayed set up. Not everyone’s hearing will be the same, so your experience with this can vary.

The Jaybird Freedoms feel solid in the hand. The aluminum earbuds can resist being crushed and the wire is strong enough to withstand rigorous workouts. The buttons on the remote are tactile, satisfying to press, and since there’s no microUSB port on the remote itself, it has been relocated to a separate power bank that comes with the headphones

Performance and features

Even though I was quite pleased with the X2 s sound quality, the Freedom left me feeling underwhelmed after listening to a range of music for several days.

At times, there was a lack of high frequency response. This could be frustrating after long listening sessions. Bass was often uncontrolled and loose on some songs with mainly bass tracks. On the other hand, a mid-range sounds somewhat recessed, hiding the singer’s voice amongst other instruments.

Jaybird’s MySound app contains tons of presets, but their athlete settings sound atrocious. I found a preset for my liking and saved it.

The sound from this earphone set was so flat and lifeless that it did not matter how I tweaked the EQ. Worse, the confined sound stage didn’t do anything to help with music that sounded like it was playing between my ears.

The Jaybird Freedom saves your EQ settings to the headphones so, whenever you pair a new device, you’ll have your personalized sound. You can also check how much battery is remaining with the software. They are killer features I wished more wireless headphones had.

While I wasn’t impressed with the sound quality, I was impressed by the Jaybird Freedom’s bluetooth connection. The wireless connection remained strong throughout my testing, and exhibited little to no hiss at lower listening volumes.

The average sound quality wouldn’t have bothered me as much if it wasn’t for the stiff competition in this product space. I found NuForce BE6i offered far better sound quality and loved its eight-hour battery life made from aluminum. One way to save money on wireless earbuds is buying the Jaybird Freedom, which are around half the price of their competitor.

We liked

The Jaybird is impressively compact and user-friendly in comparison to other headphone brands. It comes with many different tips that ideally suit the preferences of every customer. The Jaybird Freedom headphones also come with the useful feature of storing your sound profile on the headphone itself.

We disliked

However, there are a few things you don’t like about it. Lower sound quality, shorter battery life and increased cost make the Jaybird Freedom’s 200$ (about 150, AU$260) price hard to justify in comparison with its competition.

Final verdict

The Jaybird Freedoms are a rare exception to the company’s high quality product line in that they offer fewer desirable features and more shortcomings than most of their competitors.
