The HP Envy x360 13 is an incredible purchase for the budget-minded shopper. Instead of looking at what features could be removed to reach a $1,000 price point, it looks to other models released by HP such as their Spectre line. Similarly, the Envy x360 13 has a lot in common with the Spectre. Both have jaw-dropping good looks and an all-aluminum chassis.

The Envy x360 13 touts a 13-inch touchscreen and comfortable keyboard. HP smartly chose AMD’s new 4000-series CPUs, which provide never seen performance for this price range and you even get yourself a decent assortment of ports (sorry, no Thunderbolt 3). Looking for the best university laptop computers? No better choice than the HP Envy x360 13.

HP Envy x360 13 price and configuration options

If you’re considering buying an Envy x360, then we recommend the 13-inch models because it is what this review will focus on. We want to mention that the cheapest configuration sells for $649 with AMD Zen 3 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD (non-SSD option available).

Our $799 configuration bumped the processor up to Ryzen 5 4500U, with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. When you can, we recommend spending another $150 on the high-end config which includes Ryzen 7 4700U CPU and 16GB of RAM. Sadly, HP doesn’t sell a model with more than 8 GB of

If privacy is important, you can pay $150 more for a 1080p display with 1,000 nits of brightness and a built-in privacy screen.

HP Envy x360 13 design

You won t find a more stylish, high-quality notebook at under $1,000. I’ve been using the Envy x360 13 for days gone by week and still can’t believe it falls into our mainstream pricing category What s so surprising about the 2-in-1 notebook computer is how similar it really is to HP Spectre x360 13 laptop. That difference big testament to HP s ability and willingness to trickle down features from its flagship laptops to less expensive models.

The HP Envy x360 starts with the slim display bezels, which draw your attention to the screen and keep the chassis compacter. In addition, it features a 88% Screen-to-body ratio for those who enjoy numbers! It looks sleek, so the best way to use it is undoubtedly on a lap for typing.

Even though the Envy x360 is only 0.7-inches thick, it manages to be thinner than some other convertibles on the market by a mere hair: How does this device fit into such a small space?

The Envy x360 features an aluminum chassis that gives it a high-end feel equivalent to the MacBook Air or other expensive all-metal laptops. In addition, its Black finish is more interesting than black and prettier than brown — giving this laptop stunning good looks. This Acer really stands out with its bold design, impressive materials and striking features.

While the Envy x360 13 is a bit heavier than its competitors, it features an aluminum casing which helps keep weight down. Laptops like the 14-inch Acer Swift 3 are lighter because of their magnesium alloy body. Magnesium is a lighter metal than aluminum, so it’s more comfortable to carry, but it also has less stability.

HP Envy x360 has the flexibility to transform into a tablet with dual hinges. These are flexible and do not require much effort, making it useful in Tent Mode or as a tablet.

The Envy does not have an IR camera for logging into windows, but the fingerprint sensor on the bottom row of my keyboard was quick and reliable within my testing.

HP Envy x360 13 ports

HP’s new Envy x360 13 does not have an Intel CPU. It still has a good range of ports, but it doesn’t support Thunderbolt 3.

On the left side are a USB 3.1 Type-A input and adjacent to it is a microSD card slot

You’ll find a second USB 3.1 Type-A port and a USB Type-C port, as well as the headphone jack. I would have liked another USB-C port (ideally located on the right side) rather than just the charger plug. Though I like the hinge for the Type-A port, it is inconvenient and hard to use.

HP Envy x360 13 display

In spite of its low price tag, Dell’s Envy x360 13 is a fun and colorful machine. I particularly like the laptop’s screen: The 13-inch 1080p display has plenty of color, brightness, and sharpness to spare.

After seeing the trailer for “Greyhound,” I can see the riveting snapshot of a ship in Tom Hanks’ vivid seafoam green eyes.

The large rainbow is best appreciated from a boat. The glossy screen of the Envy x360 13, which may reflect light in bright conditions, is an excellent feature when you want to work outside.

The HP Envy x360 has a high-quality touchscreen that responds quickly to my taps and swipes. The one drawback is not always having a stylus, since I often use the pen to highlight or underline key text in documents.

The Envy x360 13 produces 108% of the sRGB color gamut, more than both the Swift 3 (62%) and other mainstream notebooks (96%). The Yoga C740 produced 111% of the standard color gamut, with a pop more color variety.

When I took the HP Envy x360 off its stand, my first test was to lift it so that light shone straight on the screen. The FHD screen with 300 nits of brightness has a noticeably dimmer display than 400-nit option in particular compared to competitors like Lenovo Yoga C740 (250 nits), Swift 3 (251 n Thanks to its new display, the Envy 13 now averages a brightness of 410 nits.

HP Envy x360 13 keyboard and touchpad

The chiclet-style keyboard on this Envy x360 13 offers generously-spaced keys that are responsive, and the keys span the whole deck to make typing comfortable. If you want to enjoy my nerdiness for one more, I also enjoy the font and typeface style used by HP.

Deep key travel would have been welcome, but the keys require more force than I prefer. These are understandable shortcomings given the physical constraints at play.

HP added shortcuts to the function row to make navigation convenient, including a microphone mute button and a webcam kill switch. The arrow keys were too small even for my fingers, making me miss the key more often than not.

I type on average at 117 words per minute with a 98% accuracy rate.

The 4.4 x 2.5-inch touchpad is wide enough that my fingers never missed the edge of the surface from executing Windows 10 gestures, and it s a complaint but I would have liked to see a smooth glass coating instead of the slightly textured mylar. Although two-finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom didn t work at all in the Synaptics drivers, those features proved to be functioning normally on this side of the house.

HP Envy x360 13 audio tracks

The Envy x360 13 has the same sonic limitations as other Spectre laptops do. It also does not have a 3-watt mono speaker like its precursor, which results in thinner and more shrill sound at maximum volume. And I got a sense of déjà vu: I’m hearing the same buzzing distortion that I complained about in my review of the Spectre, which is still fresh in my head.

The speakers sound fine for most songs, but I noticed some distortion when vocals were too soft. Contrary to what I expected, this laptop has a subpar sound system.

Personally, I wouldn’t touch the B&O Audio Control iphone app unless you’re adept at using an equalizer. None of the presets tested sounded any much better than the default HP Optimized setting.

HP Envy x360 13 performance

Under the hood, Envy x360 13 comes powered by AMD processor and 8GB of RAM for outstanding performance at an affordable cost. One of the many aspects that helped this laptop stand out is its performance.

The HP ENVY x360 13 is perfect for heavy-duty tasks such as having 25 tabs open while also streaming YouTube Music in the background. H-series processors are made for power users, but the performance you get on the Envy x360 13 for $800 is still remarkable.

The HP Envy x360 13 has an impressive CPU, on par with laptops costing twice as much.

The laptop scored 19,064 on the Geekbench 4.3 efficiency test.

Laptops with the very best CPU Performance

The HP Envy x360 13 achieved 25% higher scores than the average laptop and the same task in less time during our Geekbench 5 test. If you want more convincing, the Envy x360 13 outscored the $1,799 MacBook Pro (4,399) in this test.

Our real-world benchmark video conversion saw the x360 Envy convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution in 13 minutes and 44 seconds using Handbrake. The Envy had an impressive time of 13:44, surpassing competitors such as the Yoga C740 (20:43) or the average notebook computer (22:38). The HP Swift 3, equipped with its Ryzen 7 CPU, completed the task in 11 minutes.

The storage in the Envy x360 13 is too slow for its $1,399 price; it took 16 seconds to duplicate our 4.97GB multimedia set, which translates to a transfer rate of 318MBps per second rather than 1,200MBps as with other premium laptops.
Rewrite 2: The Envy x360 13 That’s slower than SSDs in the Envy 13 (363.5 MBps), and the Yoga C740 (848.2 MBps) as well as the category average (358.7 MBps).

HP Envy x360 13 graphics

The HP Envy x360 was capable of playing Dirt 3 at 78 fps with the graphics set to 1080p on High. The Envy 13 and Yoga 910 were barely able to run at 30 fps, while the AMD Swift 3 stood out at 79 fps. That could all change later this year when Intel releases the Tiger Lake chips with Xe graphics, so keep an eye out.

HP Envy x360 13 battery life

The Envy x360 is a laptop that can last all day, no need to charge.

We were impressed with the x360’s battery life, which lasted 11 hours and 52 minutes when consistently browsing the web at 150 nits of brightness. Although it did not fare as well on the newer browsers, the 10 hour and 45-minute battery life is still excellent.

The HP Envy x360 went 11 hours and 31 minutes before shutting down, as the Yoga C740 (10:18) and Swift 3 (11:09) also surpassed 10 hours of battery life. The category average is 9 hours and 25 minutes.

HP Envy x360 13 cameras

The 720p camera on the Envy x360 13 does an okay job of taking video and having a selfie taken inside with the sun beaming in through a window looked grainy when zoomed in. That being said, my green eyes and mildly sunburnt face were well-captured. I also had no problem identifying individual strands of hair

The Envy x360 13 is a thin-bezeled laptop and the camera is situated in the top center of the screen. The camera placement takes up less space on your face then other laptops, but there will still be an awkward feeling as you talk with coworkers or business associates.

HP Envy x360 13 heat

We were pleasantly surprised when the Envy x360 13 didn t give off any hot spots after playing a 15-minute video completely on screen. After our heat test, it took only 86 degrees to warm up, which is well below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The touchpad reached a nice 77 degrees and the keyboard got up to 84 degrees.

HP Envy x360 13 software and warranty

It’s time for HP to consolidate all of their non-essential programs. The Envy x360 13 has nine different software on it, and a lot of them could be packaged together in a single program. For example, the laptop has HP Audio Switch, HP Command Center, HP Documentation, and so on.

Among the many features of this laptop, HP Support Assist is arguably the most essential. The dashboard provides valuable information on your warranty and battery life, as well as storage space remaining. It is also the simplest way to get access to updated software and drivers.

HP gets two thumbs up for the Bang & Olufsen Audio Control iphone app where you could customize your sound with an equalizer. It is thumbs down, however, for the unneeded bloatware apps like Booking (which is excellent service, but it should be opt-in), ExpressVPN (same idea), and Mc

The HP Envy 13 x360 runs Windows 10 Home, and includes a one-year warranty.

Bottom line

The Envy x360 13 is the foremost sub-$1,000 notebook computer available. It’s much better than the clamshell version we reviewed this past year and current Asus ZenBooks that have historically delivered on value.

I’m still struggling to understand how HP managed to keep the purchase price down. There are just a few areas where corners were cut, including a mediocre M.2 SSD and having less an IR camera. And because the Envy x360 13 uses AMD chips, it generally doesn’t support Thunderbolt 3. Though our $799 configuration doesn’t have the top specs, it still comes in at under four figures.

The Envy x360 13’s lightweight, aluminum chassis houses a beautiful, brilliant display; and the keyboard’s keys are surprisingly comfortable to type on. The Envy x360 13 is a great alternative to the Spectre x360 13 due its lower price.
