The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 is a speaker for stationary use. It delivers on both the bass and clarity levels, not to mention its lack of portability.

The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 weaves together the best features from its predecessors. With Bluetooth 4.1 support for dual speakers, seamless remote control via an app and low-energy consumption, it is a robust speaker that never quits.
There are five colors available for the onyx studio 3, including white, black, burgundy, navy and grey. For added convenience when making conference calls a button has been included that will make adjusting your volume easier. The front of the speaker is clean with only a mesh speaker grill and an Harman Kardon logo.
If you are looking for light and compact speakers, keep looking; these are anything but. But the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 is extremely well-built and still lightweight enough to move around from place to place without too much back pain or difficulty.
The handle is quite useful and makes carrying it easy. I love to call it semi-portable because for what it really is, you’re still getting something lightweight not as subtle or small enough for each and every occasion. Despite the larger size, it reverberates from audio performance that’s comparable to bass found in smaller speakers.

Deep Bass, Rich Treble
The bigger footprint of the Studio 3 Onyx helps to bring all of its features to life. The 2 large woofers (2 x 75mm) and 2 tweeters (2 x 20mm) give the sound a rounded bass that reaches deep levels without overpowering mid and high tones. The iPhone 8 packs a powerful punch while still balancing the bass to enable you to enjoy vibrant, dynamic music. Its custom tweeters are set on either side of the logo that delivers unique spacial sound that can be enjoyed by everyone in your general vicinity.
All of this results in a speaker that provides soothing harmonies and mellow, calm vocals.
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 gives incredible depth in bass along with lifelike reproduction of mids and highs. Harman Kardon Studio 3 delivers what seems to be an impossible level of loudness without distortion.

Going Duo with Dual Speakers
I spent time with the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 speakers to see if I wanted it as a replacement for my stereo systems. Certain features, like the speaker settings are clunky and finicky. It plays one mono instead of two stereo audio tracks, so this is only a “solution” in name only. You get two dual mono speakers that are perfect for any room in your house.
When pairing the Bluetooth connection, there are two beeps. Unusual for a stereo system is that if you turn up one speaker the other plays louder too (both play at same volume). I’m not certain, but I suspect that one is a primary unit and the other a sub-unit.
It may not seem like a big deal, but you’ll have to take the earphones out of whoever you connected them with if you want to continue listening. The two stereo speakers would come with an iphone app that easily controls the process. The package, though it may initially be pleasing to the eye, has some deficiencies in functionality.
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 battery might be better. At 5 hours in low volume, it’s ok but fairly low. Other speakers rated at a day still can deliver around 12 hours – a major difference. The bigger sound output and power required is a reason why the battery life isn’t as impressive, but keep in mind that for playback at near max volume or on high volume you are looking at about 1-2 hours.
When using on battery power, the volume is halved to 30W. We found that even when powered by its own internal battery, this speaker sounded substantially quieter than other standalone speakers we tried.
Life of the Party
The Harman Kardon Studio 3 is an excellent bluetooth speaker. It provides high quality sound without distortion, with respect for lows, mids and highs tones. Sturdy and vibrant speakers with amazing clarity, Harman Kardon’s Onyx Studio 3 may be the highlight of any party. And at $129/$149 it offers among the best affordability from a premium audio equipment brand in the realm of Bang & Olufsen or BOSE. Deep, rich sound is something you can experience with the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 and so are up to 18 hours of battery life.
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 has a battery that lasts up to 18 hours, so I’ve rented the Studio 4 for summer travel. Stay tuned and follow my blog as I post an in-depth review of both studio versions at CAVS Websites.
