Family road trip experiences

After a family vacation from Seattle to Oregon (283 miles each way), my partner and children realized that using a GPS personal navigation device would be the ideal solution. Below are a few of our experiences with the device:

Hardware

The Garmin DriveLuxe 50 has a significant size and loads of features to make your next drive easier. It weighs 231 grams (8 ounces), has an anti-glare 5.1 inch 800 480 pixels display, and a microSD slot for expandable storage abilities. Consisting of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the battery life is about one hour.

On the front of the device, you will find a microphone to use for certain actions (like answering phone calls) without touching the screen. The power button is in the upper-right corner next to a large speaker at bottom right.

In past, I’ve used window suction cup mounts that stretched the device on some occasions. Garmin’s DriveLuxe 50 mount offers a very strong magnet design that allows users to quickly drop it into place thanks to its adjustable arm and super strong magnet. A car charger cable is included with the mounting arm, which can connect to your automobile for power. A USB wire could be inside of the box in order to connect these devices to a personal computer, used for syncing and updating your device.

The Garmin DriveLuxe 50 also has the option to use a wireless backup camera accessory, if you purchase it separately.

Software

The Garmin DriveLuxe 50 LMTHD comes with lifetime map updates and HD traffic, making it more widely used. All U.S. maps are installed on the device itself, while apps like Waze will provide varied coverage for various countries or regions overseas.

The DriveLuxe 50 has two primary options. To use the basic map features, simply select “Where you Can?” from the list of choices. Tapping the WHERE YOU CAN? icon jumps you to other displays with icons for home, address, saved, recent, categories, trip planner, and more. You can add a substitute for shortcuts as well like your favorites areas, cities intersections and more.

Apps for phones include phone, smart notifcations, smartphone link, traffic, backup camera, baby cam and voice command. You need to install the Garmin app on your Android or iOS device if you want a seamless navigation experience on your phone and the navigation device.

To set up your Garmin DriveLuxe 50, there are a variety of options to choose from. Some examples include route settings, display settings, traffic settings and trip points options

The new driveluxe 50 has a large, responsive touchscreen and easy-to-use buttons that make finding destinations simple. Best of all, the large back buttons let you easily exit navigation mode without navigating through menus.

Pricing and other options

Garmin offers devices with displays from 5.0 to 7.0 inches, and the essential software is similar across all these sizes; however, there are variations for price range depending on screen size, traffic-satellite coverage options, mounting solutions and durability of device.

Conclusion

My wife recently purchased a new car that has integrated navigation in the dash, but we still have cars at home that are 11-14 years old. Newer models of dashboard GPS devices lose data quickly and don’t offer the other features seen on Garmin’s products.

The Garmin DriveLuxe 50 feels as though an extremely high-end premium device, and it performs just as well. I would have liked to see a dashcam integral in this model, but that can be done on the cheaper DriveAssist model for less than $50 more. The driving assistance is simply fantastic and it may very well pay for itself if you travel a larger traffic area.

After driving with the Garmin DriveLuxe 50, I am ready to get this in bulk for my children. I understand my oldest daughter who is bad with directions wants one and as she graduates from college or university for me to defend myself against the world I know she would like a companion from Garmin in her car.
