Why you need to trust us
We polled toaster engineers and professionals in various fields including renowned baker and cookbook writer Peter Rein hart, as well as Michael Sheaf e–an expert toaster-refurbisher. We also spoke with some product managers at trusted kitchen appliance brands, among other things. To find the best toaster for you, we looked at a range of factors so that you can make an informed decision. Black Friday shopping is in stores right now and there are truly amazing deals to be had.
New Best Deals for All Type of Toaster
For the initial edition of this guide, Brendan Nystedt spent 30 hours researching and testing toasters. Wire cutter home writer Michael Sullivan analyzed six four-slot toasters for our 2016 revision, and along the way ate even more toast, bagels, and frozen waffles than he’d like to admit. Sabrina Imbler, a Wire cutter junior personnel writer, evaluated 14 two-slot and four-slot toasters for our 2018 update.
Who can purchase this
Owning a toaster is like owning any other electric appliance- it needs to be replaced when the quality has deteriorated.
A toaster oven, that can handle tasks like roasting vegetables, is more versatile and capable than a two-slot toaster. If you don’t have bedroom for a huge toaster oven, four-slot toasters will be the strategy to use. With double the capability, four-slot toasters let you produce considerably more toast quickly, which is fine for feeding a big family.
How we picked
Toasters have been around for over a century, but they do not change much. They simply come with newer features such as bagel modes or frozen bread options. Toasters often disappoint with a lack of features, too few slots and toast that comes out slightly uneven and underdone in some areas.
To find the best toaster, we scanned a large number of best-selling models in Amazon and kitchenware sites. For the 2018 upgrade, we tested eight brand new toasters against our past picks. Although technology is easy, many small factors go into producing a reliable device that works well and produces equally browned toast each time. During our research, we looked for the following features:
Inside our research and tests, here’s what we were looking for:
The following is a list of attributes found by many people to be helpful, but not necessary.
if you want a toaster that magically produces perfect toast every time, you’re better off not buying one. Even the nicest ones require some babysitting. Baker Peter Rein-hart advised us that even he must occasionally look in on his toaster and make sure it’s doing its job correctly. When I toast bread, sometimes the lever needs to be pushed down twice before it will close. He just shakes his head and says that its a cliche akin to not expecting them to work properly you can put up with it or get mad at the toaster All our finalists had a cancel button.
How we tested
To see how each one toaster handled different kinds of breads, we toasted a large number of store bought loaves into various shapes: basic white bakery, frozen waffles and English muffins; and three back-to-back rounds of Wonder breads. We found that the toasters we researched were most efficient when it came to maintaining control over heat.
In each round, we timed how long it took for the toasters to make brown toast. We judged toast on factors such as top-to-bottom and side-to-part evenness, color settings (low setting vs. high setting) as well as reliability e.g., would everyone eaters that looked at these results find them too We also toasted a bit of bread, judging its consistency and taste.
We tried each toaster’s bagel mode on everything bagels, which we chose because they’re fluffier and thicker than traditional New York-design bagels. We sought to imitate the frozen modes on frozen waffles. We analyzed the tips on a large number of different electricity’s employing blueberry Eggo waffles. The waffles we made were crisp and dark brown, but not burnt or soggy. We tried toasting English muffins to find out which models had the easiest time retrieving small items without getting our fingers in the heated slots. We checked how easy each toaster was to clean and noted the heft of each model in comparison with others in its class.
The very best toasters: Cuisinart CPT-122 2-Slice and CPT-142 4-Slice Compact Plastic Toasters
The two-slot Cuisinart CPT-122 2-Slice Compact Plastic Toaster and its four-slot counterpart, the CPT-142 4-Slice Compact Plastic Toaster come with a long list of best features. These inexpensive toasters brown breads, bagels, and waffles much better than their competition at price range The Cuisinart toasters have large slots for thick bagels and the plastic material dials feel sturdy. We found the Cuisinart to be among the tiniest models we tested, and therefore ideal for people in smaller kitchens that may have limited counter space.
Both Cuisinart’s toasted evenly throughout and side by side, even after multiple batches. They beautifully browned the entire slice of Wonder loaf of bread, while other toasters, such as the Osters or Hamilton Beaches we analyzed, left unappetizing natural halos at the top. The Breville Die-cast 4-Slice Toaster made lighter toast than the two slot, but this may be easily fixed by adjusting the toasting dial. Similarly priced models and expensive equipment produced brioche that were also whiter and patchier.
Cuisinart’s made toast with similar color tones, but it was quite a bit faster than the top pick.
Although most toasters evenly browned the bagels, some actually made them lighter on one side. Two of our favorites were: So both Cuisinart’s and Eggo offered waffles that were crispy on the outside, but soft and moist on the inside.
The Cuisinart’s slots were wider and deeper than any other toaster we tested. It accommodated the puffiest of bagels without us having to power it in, as was the case with many other toasters. It also has a high lift feature on the lever so you can pull up smaller items like English muffins without losing your fingertip.
The Cuisinart controls are basic, with a knob that adjusts the darkness of the toast (from 1 to 7) and buttons that select mode or cancel the toast cycle. The bread settings are appropriate, and setting up the dial at 3 will generate bread rather than too dark. Great extent, the Cuisinart toaster offers an even better experience than most of its competitors. The Brevill die didn’t like these you could wiggle the dial of the Hamilton Beach front-loaded Old classic Chrome 2 slice toaster or the Dark + Decker T2707S 2 Slice Toaster. Neither Cuisinart sensed warm to touch, after multiple rounds of toasting, instead of some steel versions in our testing.
Cuisinart’s boxy design makes them more compact than many of the other toasters we tested. If you have limited kitchen space as well as your counter top reaches little, the Cuisinart two-slice toaster can be a good choice. Between their Cuisinart’s, the four-slice type is only 4 inches wider than then two-slice version. In the event you’ve got a little less counter space, then we recommend you go with the Cuisinart 4-slice toaster.
Cleaning and preserving a Cuisinart toaster is as elementary as removing the detachable crumb tray. Cleaning this model is performed by pulling out the removable tray, wiping it clean, then sliding it back into position. The Cuisinart offer a limited 3-year warranty, which also matches Magi-mix for the longest warranty of any Our previous pick, the Oster Jelly Bean and our current two-slice and four-cut update picks from Breville all offer a one-time limited warranty.
We’ve been using the Cuisinart CPT-122 toaster in our Wire-cutter test kitchen since March 2018, and despite being a seldom-used appliance it still performs quite well. This printing is still readable, and there’s no sign any labels have fallen off.
Flaws but not deal-breakers
Both Cuisinart toasters toast bread evenly, with the occasional exception of leaving a faint pale seam around the edges. However, these seams are so thin that most people won’t notice any physical difference in their toast’s crunchiness.
As an economical toaster with plastic levers, the Cuisinart’s mechanics seem less strong than our upgrade picks. That being said, most stainless steel-bodied toasters also have plastic levers so it’s not a deal breaker for us. Most toasters we surveyed had worn-away label stickers, but Cuisinart’s most important controls were created on a different type of sticker that is easier to remove.
Unlike the bagel toasting setting on the Breville, which just adds more time without considering external heat levels, Cuisinart’ feature creates a crisp outer edge with a soft inside thanks to its close-side focus.

And even though the Cuisinart’s toasting strength remained consistent across multiple batches of bakery, we nonetheless recommend adjusting the adjustments in order to compensate for the inevitable buildup of heat. Toaster ovens are getting more and more advanced as time goes on, but there’s one thing that hasn’t been improved too much: the lack of settings.
