The Bose SoundLink Mini II keeps the same price as the previous generation, but it is available in two new colors – Carbon and Pearl. This compact and versatile speaker aims to repair some of the original’s shortcomings while adding a few new features including an extended battery life.

The new 1.5 pound (0.67kg) model from Bose is virtually identical to its predecessor but now includes a microphone for speakerphone capabilities and looks good too. One of the advantages of this speaker is its 10-hour battery life, which lasts twice as long as the 7 hours on the previous model.

Improvements to the original speaker include charging cables that are now standard USB instead of proprietary, and a new dock cradle for the home. (Personally, I always leave the cradle linked to the Bose-provided USB charging cable and carry around another Micro-USB cable for when I’m out of the house.)

The SoundLink Mini II shares the same design influences that you would be more likely to see at Apple than other companies. The sound quality is what commands your attention, but the construction and aesthetics also deserve credit. And while it weighs in at 1.5 pounds, this nonetheless feels lighter than a lot of other all-plastic Bluetooth speakers on the market today. Whatever it is, that’s an attractive and very compact wireless speaker.

The new speaker lets you pair two devices at the same time and switch back and forth between them; it can also remember up to eight devices. The Bose SoundLink Mini II also features fast pairing with voice prompts. It also identifies your devices by name using text-to-speech.

Available for $25, the soft covers come in several colors. This is our first look at the new gray color option.

Performance

The SoundLink Mini II sounds nearly identical to its predecessor. It is small, but the sound it produces is surprisingly big considering its size. The treble and bass are clear and generally natural-sounding, though it could still use a little more high end for those who desire more detail in music clarity. It’s a great speaker for small spaces (like your kitchen, bedroom, and dorm room).

I compared it to the Sony SRS-X55, that is a tiny bit bigger speaker and costs less. For what they are, they re both very good speakers. The Sony comes with an MSRP of $180).

The sound stage of the Bose is larger and does a better job with acoustic material, flattering it slightly more than the Sony. For example, Amy Winehouse’s Valerie Live, Laura Marling’s Strange.

What you enter the box (charging dock is roofed). Sarah Tew/CNET It isn’t as smooth with rock and harder driving music, so when you crank the quantity and throw complicated tracks at it or music with a whole lot of bass the speaker compensates by restraining the quantity just a little and clipping certain frequencies therefore the speaker doesn’t It struggles in louder settings.

On the whole, Bose did a better job with Bleachers Wild Heart than it has with other Bluetooth speakers and headphones we ve tested. It is a tough track to keep up and may sound like chaos on lesser Bluetooth speakers. However, it lacked the consistency of larger speakers with better range.

It should be noted with each one of these small bluetooth speakers, there is no real stereo separation (perhaps only if you are seated at a good distance from it). With some bluetooth speakers the UE Boom and Megaboom, for instance you can wirelessly combine two speakers to augment the sound or create a stereo pair. You can’t use this Bose to work in tandem with another speaker, it is designed only for individual use.

Conclusion

The SoundLink Mini II also offers a deep and rich sound with its proprietary acoustic design. The llink Mini II is right in the Goldilocks spot among the ideal price and features.

If someone needs a speaker for the pool, one that is waterproof and takes care of the identically priced UE Boom. Sony SRSX55 provides high quality sound at this price point. But ultimately, the Bose SoundLink Mini II is hard to beat. It’s one of the more excellent compact wireless speakers overall, with a fantastic design, powerful sound quality, and a better feature set.
