What’s In The Box?

Like their older brother, the ATH-M50x, the Audio Technica ATH-M40x are not a small pair of headphones. You can tell by just looking at just how big this box is for them. Weve seen some pretty large bluetooth speakers come in much smaller boxes before.

Opening it up, you ll find a piece of cardboard that wraps around the headphones to hold both the carrying pouch and instructions/warranty. Underneath are the headphones themselves wrapped in fabric on another piece of cardboard, which you can just pull out. Locate the 3.5 mm cables and audio tracks cable that are included; these cables are of good length to reach your headphone jack on your playback device.

Build & Design

Stepping down the cost from the ATH-M50x, Audio-Technica had to cut corners somewhere to make the ATH-M40x, and among these is variety. Though you can get it in one color option if you buy it, there are two others when purchasing an ATH-M50x. The headphones have a matte black finish with highlights of silver for the Audio-Technica logo.

These are a big pair of headphones, but that’s what helps them to produce excellent sound. If you’re looking for something more comfortable though, this is probably not the best option. I have worn these for so long and it is clear that they are meant to be used with longer sessions. Even though the headphones were warmer than I am used to, there was no fatigue after a session and even in hotter weather, they never got too hot. This headband is not padded but it was still very comfortable.

The earcups rotate almost too freely, and though this is more of a potential point for failure on the build, the ATH-M40x feel like fairly durable headphones. Unfortunately, we can’t put our review units to heavy stress testing but it feels as if tough cans. Normally, a speaker’s construction and purchase price would lead us to question its durability, but this pouch protects the headphones so we’ll cut them some slack.

Connectivity

As the ATH-M40x are designed with monitoring at heart, you’re unlikely to find Bluetooth connectivity, or even a mic and remote. That is one pair of headphones built with only one thing at heart: hearing music. Audio-Technica has provided a few tips on how to find the best solution.

Normally, when headphones have two cables, one of the cables is plugged in to a remote control. In this case, Audio-Technica has taken an old-school approach and included an extra coiled cable that I really like. This benefit is especially helpful for children learning how to read.

Though the cables that connect to the headphones are 3.5 mm, this headphone model features a proprietary locking connector for both ends of the cable which keeps them secure and reduces potential issues as they will not rip out easily if someone trips over them. Luckily, the coiled cable has a bit of give, so it is less likely to occur.

Sound Quality

One of the first major differences that you might notice between your ATH-M40x and the pricier ATH-M50x is driver size. The drivers in the M40x are 40 mm in proportions, slightly smaller than 45 mm found in the M50X. While these models may look similar, their recordings sound different.

Our goal in testing this product was to assess its fidelity, so we paid close attention to CDs and lossless audio files played through a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 digital audio interface. During testing I noticed that the headphones had a favorable effect on music coming from cellular devices.

Lows

Despite their small size, the mid-range drivers in the M40x produce a great deal of bass. Bass on the ATH-M40x headphones is not remotely annoyingly boomy.

Mids

Studio monitor headphones are essential for accurately monitoring vocal quality, guitars and other specific frequencies. The ATH-M40x accomplishes this with ease. The midrange sounds clear and accurate, with rich low-mid depth.

Highs

The ATH-M40x are excellent for delivering crisp highs with remarkable detail. These headphones may be harsh if they’re within the mix, but this won’t add any of those.

If you want to hear a soundstage with good stereo imaging, these headphones won’t disappoint, but if that’s not what you’re looking for, then these may disappoint. The ATH-M40x trade a good seal for comfort.

Conclusion

Obviously, Audio-Technica wouldn’t sell two products that could do exactly the same thing as the other so it’s clear that while the M40x isn’t quite as good as the M50x, they’re a really close match for each other. These audio technica ath-m40x headphones are excellent for monitoring or listening to music without spending a lot of cash.
