The Acer Predator 21 X also features Intel Core i7 cpu and a customizable maintenance panel to ensure the ideal performance. But for that price point, I would have preferred a 4K display with more audio tracks.

Design: Introducing the 8th Wonder of the World

Whatever you do, don’t forget the Predator 21 X. At 18.6 pounds and 22.4 x 12.4 x 3.3 inches, this heavy machine is hard to ignore–it weighs more than some laptops, like the Alienware 17 R4 (9.6 pounds), MSI GT83VR Titan SLI (13.1 pounds

Before I dig into the specifics of my review, I want to give you a breakdown of the machine in front of me. The lid is made from gray magnesium alloy and features a few vibrant aqua-blue LEDs that really pop.

The “Predator” insignia takes center stage on the lid, looking just like the Decepticon logo. The key-board’s curve is indeed pronounced so you can see a metallic blue spacebar peeking out from the top.

When I opened the lid, I was immediately impressed by the gorgeous curved display and inlaid my fingers on the sleek keyboard deck ruled by a maintenance panel with a wicked-looking dragon painted on one side. The triangular Gorilla Glass panel lends an alluring touch to this laptop’s design. A closer look at the panel reveals a blue light illuminating the fan. You have six macro buttons on your left and many status lights along the right.

The Predator 21 X has everything you need for a gaming laptop including curved display, ports, and an external hard drive. Along the right-hand side of the chassis are three USB 3.0 ports and a Kensington lock slot. On the left, you’ll find two more USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader and jacks for a headset and mic. At the back there’s one USB Type-C dock, two Thunderbolt 3 docks, Gigabit

Like the Eon17 and Titan, the Predator 21 X is powered by two large power bricks, each weighing 2.8 pounds. To save a little space, the Predator 21 X ships with an X-shaped rubber holder to accommodate the mini-behemoths. The laptop also includes a palm rest for your wrists to stay comfortably on.

Dimensions the hefty Alienware 21 X are so large that it doesnt fit into a standard backpack. The machine ships with its own hard-shell travel case, which is watertight and dustproof. For peace of mind, this case also comes with an adjustable handle and four strong polyurethane wheels.

Display: Curves in every the Right Places

I didn’t know I needed or wanted a curved display on my notebook computer, but when I saw the Predator 21 X, the curvature of the 21-inch, 2560 x 1080 matte display was tantalizing.

Once I booted the Acer Predator 21x, my experience with it was overwhelming in the best possible way. Watching Tears of Steel on this battlized beauty, I felt a pang of sadness for those who have lost their homes to war. The dusty gold accents gleaming against powder blue pillars makes me appreciate our colors all the more. I could see each of the sniper’s tightly coiled hairs at his post.

The blue and red colors on the screen are as vibrant as any I’ve seen, hitting 172% of the sRGB color gamut. The Alienware 17 achieves 114%, and Core i7’s Titan at 121%.

Correction: “decimates” is misspelled The Eon17 garnered the best spot with 177 percent.

The 21 X has an extremely accurate 0.24 on the Delta-E test (0 is optimal), outperforming the 1.4 average for desktop replacements.

When we tested for brightness, the 21X’s display was noticeably superior, averaging 332 nits and besting the 291-nit average. The Titan (295) and Alienware 17 (335) were only slightly brighter while the EON17’s LED backlit displays averaged 335 nits

The English language has many words

The Predator 21 X has Nvidia G-Sync technology, enabling it to sync its display rate with the graphics card by employing a frame cap that matches the panel limit (in this case, 120Hz). Rendering time is near instantaneous, no matter the size of the screen.

Gaming on a Curve

When playing Mass Effect: Andromeda with Mass Effect on the Predator 21 X, the battles take up the entire screen. It had been thrilling to rush for cover in the heat of battle and then vault over, smashing down an enemy with my Krogan hammer.

Although I quickly discovered that everything doesn’t scale well to the Predator’s 21:9 aspect ratio. Even though Andromeda cutscenes scaled correctly and down to a standard 17-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio but left thick black bars on both sides of the action. Having such a jarring switch happen when I was gaming really pull me out of the action. I tried adjusting the resolution settings, to no avail. That is a problem that could have easily been solved if it had been 4K. But at this cost, Acer really should add a 4K panel.

Tobii Eye-Tracking: Keep Your Eyes on the overall game

Acer went one step further and integrated Tobii eye-tracking technology, so your eyes are the key to controlling myriad features in-game. The technology currently works with 49 titles, including Rise of the Tomb Raider, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands and Nevermind.

The game is so good you can control the camera, select targets and view info when looking at specific spots. The Tobii eye tracking technology also has functions for Windows hello and scrolling that does not require dwell on the mouse.

Audio: Where’s the Bass?

The new three-way audio system allows a listener to hear detail in soundtracks.

However there are a number of issues with the audio in these Predator 21x’s. I found that while the top-mounted tweeters and front-mounted midrange made the track sound loud, it also lacked depth and clarity . And although I listened to several bass heavy tracks (Kendrick Lamar’s DNA., Missy Elliot’s “

When I played Mass Effect: Andromeda, the sound effects and music were sometimes muffled.

Keyboard: Clicky Goodness

I really like typing on the Acer Predator 21x’s mechanical keyboard, almost just as much as I love looking at it and hearing it. The loud clacking from the keys and their Cherry MX Brown switches quickly put me in a rhythm, greatly surpassing my typical 65-wpm rate on the 10fastfingers typing test. The keyboard’s key travel is crazy (4 millimeters) and I like how the keys react when you press them.

The Acer Predator 21 X can be customized to include patterns in addition to single colors. The first of these is breathing lights, which pulse while also using less power Acer predator 21x cpu water cooling and overclocking

My favorite part of the Acer 21x’s design is probably the teal space bar and W,A,D letters. If blue isn’t your thing you can swap these out for black ones that come with it in the package.

Touchpad: Fun With Magnets

The 21 X’s keyboard is massive, but there isn’t much room for the touchpad. To solve this problem, Acer moves the touchpad to the right side of the keyboard. The 2.9 x widescreen touchpad is narrower than I’m used to and performs gestures like zooming and tapping quickly and accurately, even with multitouch

But what’s a gaming computer without the number pad? To ensure gamers have the touchpad, Acer created a reversible touchscreen.

Lifting the touchpad reveals a conveniently placed numeric keypad. Return it to its original position, and you ll be ready for more number crunching or baddie crushing.

Gaming, Graphics and VR: Doubly Nice

With two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs, it is no surprise that the Predator 21 X has an overkill amount of power. With Intel Core i9-9900K processors in vapor chamber cooling and NVIDIA RTX cards, this notebook practically begs you to crank up the settings and resolution.

I played Mass Effect: Andromeda on the 21 X and was amazed at how good it looked. I landed on Eos, a planet with burnt sienna landscape and clear blue skies. Instead of plants, there were odd bright patches in the ground that looked like flowers but act more like lithium crystals when I scanned them. I could see the tread of the tires in the gravel.

The Predator 21 X boosted our measure in the Tomb Raider benchmark (HIGH, 1920 x 1080), providing 106 frames each and every minute. This doubling of 54 fps average. The Eon17 scored 58 fps on its dual GTX 1080 GPUs, while the Alienware 17 with one GPU was able to reach 80.

Switching to Hitman, we saw the 21X achieve a frame-rate of 85 fps. Though it beat the general average by 8% (81fps), it couldn’t match competition as well as they were able to achieve 101 (Alienware 17), 103 (EON17) and 121 fps (Titan).

Benchmarks indicate the Predator 21 X has a max refresh rate of 80 fps on GTA V.

I discovered that the couple of GTX 1080 GPUs are also great for virtual-reality games, like I did with injustice: Unknown Origins. I teleported from pillar to pillar trying to avoid my opponent’s rapid-fire volley of fireballs while wanting to mount an attack on my very own using magical crows. Even though I was able to summon a stage golem, the Predator 21 X kept the image nice and smooth.

When we ran the SteamVR Performance test, the Predator reached maximum at 11, matching competitive systems.

EFFICIENCY: Multitask to Your Heart’s Content

In spite of being able to prioritize speed and smooth gameplay, the Predator 21 X is also fairly competent in doing more mundane computing tasks. The notebook’s overclockable 2.9-GHz Intel Core i7-7820HK processor with 64GB of RAM ensures that any workload will be met by these high-end specs. I swiftly launched more than 40 tabs of Google Chrome, including a few that have been running tweets from TweetDeck and Twitch streaming. I ran a granular system scan using Windows but never saw any signs of slowing.

The Acer Predator 21x excelled in the Geekbench benchmark, scoring 14,000 more than the average of desktop replacements and 17% better than the Alienware. However, both notebooks couldn t match the MSI Titan (3.9-GHz Intel Core i7-7920HQ CPU) or the Eon17 (overclocked 4.5-GHz Intel Core i7-6700K), which both produced 15,660 and 17,994 points respectively.

Stocked with two 512GB NVMe PCIe SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration, the Predator 21 X also features a 1TB seagate hard drive for larger file handling. In case you need an even greater storage capacity, there are two empty brackets just waiting to be outfitted with more speedy SDDs or HDDs as well. On our File Transfer test, the notebook duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in 6 seconds for a transfer speed of 848.2 megabytes per second. This is enough to beat the Eon17 (dual 256GB NVMe PCI-e M.2 SSDs) and Alienware 17 (512GB SSD), which scored The Titan uses dual 512GB PCIe solid state drives to deliver a blistering 1,017 MBps.

The Predator 21 X posted the fastest time in our OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro test, but it wasn’t as fast as the Alienware’s blistering 1:47.

Battery Life: Gone TOO EARLY

Acer has tried to cover virtually all aspects of the gaming experience–including software and peripherals. However, Acer may have cut some corners when it comes to battery life: The Predator 21 X lasted only 2 hours and 4 minutes on our battery test. That’s much shorter compared to the 4:24 desktop-replacement average, but enough to outpace the Eon17 s 1:25. The Titan and Alienware only did marginally better at 2:18 and 2:46.

Heat: One Cool Customer

Acer outfitted the Predator 21 X with nine heat pipes, three AeroBlade fans, and plenty of good airflow to keep the temperature down. Acer says the fans keep the main processors and graphics cards cool.

“Andromeda was a lot of fun and I enjoyed roaming around, but it got noticeably hot at the end.” But let’s face it: no one is likely to be holding this within their lap.

After it calmed down for about a quarter-hour, we fired up an HD video on YouTube. When the time elapsed, we recorded temperatures again. The touchpad measured 83 degrees and the space between your G and H keys was 81. The bottom measured 95 degrees which is still impressive considering all of the components being cooled by that air intake that runs

Despite all that air being moved throughout the system, this Predator 21 X was very quiet. You could definitely hear it in a quiet room, however, not so much that it had been a distraction.

The Acer Predator 21x is a good laptop that delivers 1280 x 720 HD images. When testing shots I took, it was clear that my shirt’s blue and pink matched up well with the purple in my hair. Although those pictures had more graininess than I would like, I could still see some flyaway hairs near the top of my head.

Software and Warranty

Acer takes a refreshingly conservative approach to bloatware by pre-installing only helpful software. And “recovery management” aids in fixing hard drive issues, for example. “DustDefender attentively reverses system airflow every handful of hours to keep dust from accumulating.”

Third-party gaming utilities also include Nvidia GeForce Experience, which comes with a complete suite of gamer-friendly apps, such as Battery Boost and Game Optimization. Additionally you’ll get yourself a free six-month trial of XSplit Gamecaster to truly help you start on your own new live-streaming hobby.

We notice though that they ‘ve managed to sneak in unnecessary software like Sling, Facebook, Twitter, Candy Crush Soda Saga, Asphalt 8 and World of WarShip.

Upgradability and Customization

The dragon painted on the maintenance panel reminds me of Bahamut Zero from Final Fantasy VII and Blue Eyes White Dragon from Yu-Gi-Oh!, so I am here for this. I also love seeing 009 of 300 stamped on the panel, letting me know I m part of at the very top club. However, if you want something just a little less (or more) dramatic, there is plenty worth looking into right now.

Everyone has a favorite pattern and those of Acer’s newest gaming monitors are as diverse as they come. What are the specs of this Acer monitor? Its a 18 inch screen. Please specify what additional monitors you want to buy, where you can purchase them and the price.

After you finish dressing up one’s body, the panel could be removed to access your RAM and two 2.5-inch hard drive if one desires to swap it out for a fresh device. The panel is very easy to remove, all you have to do is take away the screw in the lower-right corner when you’re in.

Bottom Line

I like it when notebook companies throw everything but the kitchen sink into a gaming rig. Though those who can’t afford laptops that cost thousands of dollars may not purchase one, they could still enjoy all that comes with the hundred dollar device. Acer Predator 21 X has a curved display with eye tracking technology to give you and your opponent an unfair advantage. It also comes with an overclocked Core i7 CPU and two GTX 1080 GPUs in SLI configuration. The keyboard is comfortable and customizable, and there’s even a little bit of upgradeability.
