Adidias has a number of high-quality outdoor shoes, and the Terrex Swift ranks highly among them. The R2 GTX weighs only 1 lb 8.6 oz and is waterproof for light hiking use. After a month-long backpacking trip through Canyon Country, we were impressed with the foot protection and tough fabric of the R2. It was slightly stiffer than any other material used for this product and also weighs more–not by much but enough to feel it in consistent use–than similar shoes from Adidas.

Soccer shoes are an integral part of your soccer game. If you’re choosing a new pair, it’ll be important to consider both comfort and support – especially if you play on clay or hard-pan turf.
The Adidas Terrex Swift R2 can feel stiff when you first wear it and carries that stiffness through the entire wear. The look is rather rigid overall, including a burly sole and tough ripstop mesh upper. The shoe is snug and doesn’t need to be broken in. It performs well without creating hot spots or being heavy. If you re looking for a flexible and agile trail runner-like experience where you could truly feel the bottom beneath your feet, this shoe is probably not what you need. But if you want a durable and lightweight hiking sneaker, the Terrex Swift is exactly that.
The weight of a shoe
The Terrex Swift R2 is impressively light at 1 pound 8.6 ounces, specific for the amount of protection you get. The Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX is only slightly heavier at 1 pound 10.8 ounces; however, the North Face s Ultra 111 WP weighs even more at 1 pound 13 ounces. Shoes with a weight of 14.2 oz.) and La Sportiva s Spire GTX (1 lb. 15 oz.) are both less than ideal for international travel, as they can become quite heavy when traveling abroad, resulting in some foot discomfort. Pound for pound, the Terrex Swift R2 packs a lot of punch.
The outsole is equipped with grooves and a toughened heel, giving you maximum traction in slippery conditions.
The Adidas Terrex Swift R2 has great traction with deep and durable lugs. The Continental company provided the rubber for the shoes, which is surprisingly similar in design to a car tire’s tread pattern. The R2 GTX is grippy on rock and mud, which means you can spend more time hiking instead of cleaning. The lugs are well-spaced, so this is a good shoe for people who don’t like the feeling of mud caked on to their shoes. Overall durability is a serious concern when it comes to boots in general than A good pair of shoes is key to making your outdoor adventures a success. We found that our adidas Terrex TX2 hiking shoes are durable enough despite their four-month age, but this may not be the case with all pairs.
The low weight is only one of the many benefits of these Adidas Terrex shoes. Protection may be purchased by them, as they feel a lot more like a hiking boot than their design would suggest. The Terrex Adidas is much better than the Salomon X Ultra 3. If you want to feel the trail beneath your feet, we recommend looking elsewhere. The R2 is durable and tough but not one of the most sensitive shoes that we’ve had a chance to try.
The Terrex Swift R2 features protection around the toe and sides of your foot. This design is rare for a lightweight hiking shoe, as most use only fabric covers. The Terrex Swift R2 has a nearly “strategy-shoe” style rubber toe capped with molded tpu. Furthermore, the areas along the muscles on your foot protrude with a lot more rubber, creating zones of extra protection and beyond the foot. The shoe also has a lot more hard rubber at the heel, so it’s a tough shoe given its weight. While the toughness may play a role in the overall stiffness of this shoe, protection is excellent.
The Adidas Terrex Swift R2 GTX is a low-rise shoe but offers tremendous stability. This design includes rigid structure and sturdy construction, which helps keep your foot and ankle set up. The lacing system is easy to figure out and kept the shoe tight around my foot when I walked. Those looking for a heavier, more supportive boot should go with the Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid.
It is both heavier and $25 more expensive per pair than other boots on our list but we think it is worth it due to its high ankle height, which offers great support. Compared to other low-top hiking shoes we’ve worn, the R2 has become our favorite.
The TERREX Swift R2 comes with a GoreTex liner and is waterproof. All of our testing was done in Utah, so we can say definitively that the shoe holds up well against water for at least part time use.
Regardless: We’ve not had much experience with this feature ourselves due to all out Utah-based testing; nonetheless, Gore-Tex is more breathable than other types of waterproofing, which will keep your feet from overheating when walking in hot climates. The Swift R2 GTX has a low-cut design and is therefore susceptible to water getting in whenever your foot is submerged around ankle levels. Waterproof shoes aren t as likely to let water enter, but they also won t allow it out so this should be considered when deciding between models. If you re hiking in hot, dry places that may let your shoes dry out if they get wet, the non-GTX model is a better option.
Similar to Salomon, Adidas uses a quick-lacing system on its Swift lineup called Lace Bungee. We like the idea that allows you to lace and tighten the shoe in a single swift motion. While the Salomon Lace Bungee does a good job of lacing up, it still falls short when compared to other options. The laces are stiff and clunky feeling, which makes this an inferior choice. Despite the unique lacing system, Salomon provides a better overall experience.
Fit and Sizing
According to our testing, the men’s size 12 is a true fit. The shoe lies somewhere between being just wide enough and narrow depending on foot size. If you’re directly on the fence about sizing, we suggest heading down half a size from your usual shoe size to be safe and comfortable But many people with a normal to wide foot will want the standard size.
Other Versions of the Adidas Terrex Swift R2
Adidas also has a women’s specific Terrex Swift R2 GTX shoe which is slightly lighter and the color options are different. And on the men’s side, we’ll find the Swift R2 in a mid-height boot ($170 and 1 lb. 13.2 oz.) and a non-waterproof hiking shoe ($115 and 1 lb. 11.2 oz.). It is worth noting that Adidas hasn’t released any GTX versions of the shoes for women yet, although The Adidas Terrex shoe weighs 10.8 oz.
