INTRODUCTION

Vans and Converse owe many of their sales to classics that continue to sell well across generations.

For companies like adidas and Nike, it makes sense to revisit vintage styles with newness in order that they stay relevant.

In the ten years that footwear technology has progressed, shoes no longer have to depend on stiff soles or bulky EVA midsoles. Upper materials don’t need to be cut, stitched, and assembled – as they often were before.

For some people, the most important thing in a sneaker is its ability to weigh them down. For others, however, it’s as simple and clear-cut as softness.

adidas combines retro running style with cutting-edge footwear technology for a comfortable running style from decades past.

The Adidas NMD R1 was a good example of this concept being used. Many Adidas shoes back then used color-blocked midsole plugs for support. Back your day, EVA midsoles tended to compact and lose their cushioning within just a couple hundred miles. The addition of two foam plugs for additional comfort slowed up the procedure without influencing its original look or feel.

The original Micropacer, a 1984 running shoe with an electronic pedometer concealed within the tongue. Models, including the Fire, Richfield, Boston Super and Rising star had foam plugs with different densities.

The design of the adidas NMD R1 is a tribute to its origins, with three stripes on the heel pull tab and over the plastic wrap. It also features an updated midsole in honor of these roots.
The upper offers some vintage elements as well.

The ASICS NMD shoe is a shortened version of Nomad which stands for “I prefer to explore”.

The Adidas NMD R1’s plug design and protective outsole provide a clearer example of the modern UltraBoost ATR. Other examples of this include the Nike React Element and its acg line.

In this review, I tsk the Adidas x Pharrell nm.

THE RIDE EXPERIENCE

The NMD R1 is not a running shoe and does not have the specifications necessary to compete with such shoes. Adidas has marketed this as a lifestyle shoe for streetwear enthusiasts, so it would be unfair to rate it based on performance parameters.

Decades removed from the Ultra Boost’s initial arrival, the NMD_R1 debuted. The two sneakers share an equal knowledge of Adidas engineering and athletic performance.

That said, the NMD_R1 features a different ride quality than the UltraBoost. It is stiffer and more supportive in the heel area. The reason for this is because:

The EVA foam plugs on either side of the heel aren’t just considered a simple color-blocking decoration. They are bridged together underfoot to form a U-shape that is more functional than appearances suggest.

The UltraBoost design is different than other Adidas technologies in that it features a soft Boost midsole, which attaches directly to the upper.

What are your thoughts?

There is no removable insole or liner on the NMD R1; the lasting is also its insole. The windows cut into it make the shoe flexible and invite your foot to see the Boost foam underneath, a design element which we first saw back with 2014’s PureBoost.

A shoe with no insole is always firmer than a shoe with an insole. The next layer of foam right under the foot makes a large difference in step-in comfort, and this is one of the primary reasons why the UltraBoost feels softer or plusher than the NMD. The plush leather creates an unusually colorful contrast against the darkness of the background.

The Nike+ in them is built-in, and you can t change it.

One factor in the NMD_R1 is the outsole. It comes with a gum or carbon rubber sole, and does not have the Stretchweb design of other performance products from adidas. The geometry balances giving outsole flexibility with wearing zones that work best in different conditions. The NMD has a wider outsole through the midfoot that increases rigidity.

The traction on this shoe is not as good as it could be, but it does the job.

The Continental outsole is always an excellent feature, so its omission from the Nomad was a bit of a surprise. Other shoes that are cheaper and do include it in their design like the Alphabounce Beyond make us suspicious as to why it wasn’t included- which is probably due to marketing decisions rather than any technical issue.

When viewed as an everyday shoe, there is hardly much to complain about. The full-length Boost midsole provides all day comfort with responsive cushioning, and features like color blocked foam plugs and wide outsole offer stability for the soft midsoles.

The wide upper on this shoe is really helpful.

MAYBE THE ADIDAS NMD R1 IS DURABLE?

You can be confident that there is nothing going to happen to the NMD Boost cushioning. We’ve reviewed shoes with Boost midsoles for over five years now, and we haven’t found any examples of a midsole failing.

The Adidas NMD_R1 has no Continental rubber, which means you won’t get the above-average outsole lifespan it is marketed with. As well, the runner’s durable rubber isn’t long-lasting enough to provide anywhere near the 350 400 miles of use that they claim on their website.

The upper on the adidas NMD is all mesh, making it breathable and lightweight.

THE UPPER DESIGN AND FIT

Unlike some Adidas shoes with their constricting uppers, the NMD_R1s upper features a snug but pleasant fit.

As mentioned earlier, the collar does not have the knit band of the ADIDAS NMD OG. In its place is a foam-quilted heel lining and a piped collar with interlocking.

The upper is wide and low-cut, which makes putting it on a breeze. The Trefoil logo on the heel counters an otherwise bare footbed area.

The laces on this shoe are not very functional. It is best to leave them tied and use the NMD_R1 as a slip-on shoe. There are only three rows of laces and cinching them tight will cause wrinkles on the tongue.

Adding a comfortable bootie upper, responsive boost midsole, and snug sock-like construction to an everyday sneaker design, the Adidas NMD provides comfort for all-day wear.

Despite the fact that the NMD_R1 is wider than many Adidas models, you should buy your normal size. If it feels right since you end up with a lot of room, it will be useful later on in the day as your feet swell.

PROS AND CONS

Other than the outsole not being manufactured from grippy Continental rubber, the NMD_R1 is a comfortable and versatile sneaker that you can wear daily.

The Boost midsole provides comfortable, underfoot cushioning. The high-tech interior is soft and breathable while holding firmly to your feet.

The firm EVA plugs add retro style and stability while providing a plush ride.

SHOES LIKE THE ADIDAS NMD R1

The range of NMDs is diverse. The Primeknit is a type of knit shoe that includes stretchier material than most types of knit shoes. There are a handful of Primeknit variations with minor differences.
