Today, we’re looking at Acer’s Predator X27. This 27-inch IPS screen with 384 LED zones and 144Hz has HDR capability. Gamers will appreciate its 4K resolution and G-Sync compatibility. It could be yours for about $2,000 as of this writing.

Acer Predator X27 We first encountered HDR picture quality in the Dell s UP2718Q; we did not see another one until Asus PG27UQ, which we reviewed a couple of weeks ago. Why was this important? Because it is the only way to maximize HDR’s potential.

The Acer Predator X27 includes a full-array backlight to ensure that power can be assigned individually to the monitor, enabling it go 1,000 nits without going brighter. Though not as noteworthy as OLED or plasma displays, this monitor can claim a wide dynamic range. It is the third model we ve reviewed that may manage this feat.

Unpacking & Accessories

When you open the box of your Predator X27, be sure to lift it out and get ready to use it. One of our favorite things was the light hood that comes with this monitor–it’s something we never saw before on a home monitor.

The Predator X27’s cables include a USB 3.0, HDMI and DisplayPort, but the external power demands come in brick form. A cover tidies up the input panel with a cable clip for upright. There is not factory calibration data sheet for Adobe RGB or HDR modes.

The X27 s hood is quite stiff, created from thick, solid plastic with light-absorbing fabric lining. The sides slide onto the panel (you ll desire a Phillips-head screwdriver), and the very best snaps on. Gaming monitors are equipped with a lot of features that can make the experience much more immersive, but the most noticeable improvement is how it improves image quality in dark rooms.

The bezel is wider than the anti-glare layer and sits higher on the display panel, which we ve seen in pictures. The X27 also didn t have a Tobii Eye Tracking device installed during our testing of it. On-screen display (OSD) controls stay on the bottom edge of the monitor and allow you to select two different functions, like brightness or input selection. The control panel shows a full suite of features for those playing HDR and SDR games.

The stand is made of thin, medium gray aluminum. The swivel point is a set of large discs that add to the weight of the package- just over 20 pounds. The monitor is extremely high-quality, with adjustments that include five inches of height and a 20-degree swivel in each direction to go along with 25-degree forward tilts.
This change was made in order adjust the paragraph so it flows more smoothly. The stand has a stout handle, so it is easy to move the heavy display around.

At nearly 3.5 inches thick, the Acer Predator X27 is slightly thicker than many LCD monitors. Two USB 3.0 ports can be found on the left side, while two more are located in back with one of each type of input (HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4). To use G-Sync, you will need to have a display that supports it. Audio is supported by the internal speakers, which produce sound with surprising volume and no major distortion. Instruments produced are clear but don’t come in loud enough for some people’s tastes. They sound better than most of the built-in monitor speakers we ve heard.

It is important to experiment with this Predator X27’s Acer EyeProtect settings, especially if you are sensitive to strong colors. To start, set the SDR sRGB Color option off and change the contrast setting from Maximum to Standard. In your test of these settings inside our tests you ll see that it measures closer to DCI-P For standard content, we recommend leaving it on because you will not need to calibrate. That being said, if you do want to calibrate in this mode then there are RGB sliders and a gamma offset feature. The LCD display features backlight that can be adjusted, and it’s a variable mode.

Gaming features for the X27 include an overclock, which takes the 120Hz refresh rate from native to 144Hz after a reboot. Our sample had no problems running at 144Hz; however, extra heat activated an interior fan that was quite loud. Meanwhile, the Asus PG27U gaming monitor has a similar screen, but is noticeably quieter. Furthermore, you can set the backlight to different modes: Gaming or Desktop; these alter contrast on the display based on content type. Gaming is the best end to offer good performance. Also includes aiming reticles, an fps (fps) counter and a three-level overdrive control. Normal offers transient response without ghosting which is in between the higher settings. Talking about blur-reduction, ULMB is not included.

One of the best features is that there are LED lights on both edges and the back surface. You can turn them all off or just leave which areas you want lit, making it great for gaming in your room or at a LAN party. A wide variety of combinations are possible, and we d had a ball tinkering with them.

The X27 also features auto brightness and auto black level, thanks to a little sensor which is positioned near the top of the screen. When fired up, it measures room light and adjusts the picture accordingly. Inside our lab, we never found a dependence on this feature. In extreme situations, the Predator X27 pumped out a lot of brightness which created an excess amount of distraction.

When you are done customizing the X27 to your liking, all of your settings could be saved to one of three memories.

Setup & Calibration

The X27 doesn’t need calibration for SDR content. If you want to get more colors in SDR mode, turn off the sRGB color setting. This will provide you with an Adobe RGB gamut measuring closer to DCI-P3 most of the time and have lots of extra red.

When configuring the individual mode with RGB sliders, we found the gamma was not as dark as desired. We were unable to notice any significant difference in performance from the other presets when tested. We found the brightness reading to be accurate and could tell it was close when we entered 200nits.

HDR mode does not provide additional flexibility, since all controls but color temperature are grayed. You can access these same impressive color presets in the SDR mode without watermarking them as HDR modes. Windows and most games allow you to modify the peak brightness for HDR content.
