Design

The Pulse 2, without light show enabled, resembles the design of many lightweight Bluetooth speakers on the market. It’s 7.6-by-3.3 inch (HW), 1.7 pound cylindrical design houses drivers and an LED system under a splash proof grille that covers virtually 360 degree radius from speaker base to top rim of The speaker’s passive radiators are found at the desired position, which is usually top and bottom panels.

A small and narrow control panel is what keeps the grille from wrapping around the circumference of the speaker. Here, you ll discover a light sensor (more on that in an instant), the power button, and buttons for Bluetooth pairing, Light Show mode, Volume (which work together with your device s master volume), Connect mode (for pairing two Pulse A snap-shut compartment below the controls houses a micro USB charging port and 3.5mm aux input, though no 3.5mm music cable is included.

The LED lights are exciting and colorful. However, they offer no audio synchronizing features. The Pulse 2 attempts to respond to the colours present in your surroundings, or at least simulate that. When you press the light button before a dark blue wall, for example, it will shift its color pattern to blues. This function needs good lighting in order for it to work properly – but on the plus side, it’s an interesting idea! And yes, you can turn off these lights after a few minutes.

If you buy a second Pulse 2 speaker, they can be linked wirelessly with your other device to play the same music- this is achieved through the free JBL Connect app.

With the one exception of features, the Pulse 2 has few shortcomings. For instance, it ships with just a USB cable and power adapter. A carrying tote would be nice too; so would this 3.5 mm music cable.

The battery life for the JBL Pulse 2 is estimated to be 10 hours, but your mileage will vary depending on how loud you are. If you use Bluetooth then it could also last longer than if you’re just using a corded connection. Your usage of lights will also impact how many hours it lasts on battery.

Performance

The Pulse 2 gives a fantastic sense of bass response because of its size. The passive radiators give a solid, but less powerful, thump. For light-weighed speakers in this price range, this is about as good as it gets for the bass department.
***** The bass is more powerful at moderate listening levels-signal processing limiting the bass at high volumes

The drums sound good, but if given too much bass boosting, the drums can sound unnatural.

Jay-Z and Kanye West’s No Church in the Open gets enough high-mid occurrence from its drum loop to slice through the dense mix. Some listeners may prefer a crisper or brighter sound signature. The quality bass of the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat is good because they’re not overwhelming—the speakers just don’t have that subwoofer-like response. Instead, it’s a more gentle bump without much character to its tone.

Orchestral tracks gain some bass response in John Adams’ The Gospel In line with the Other Mary that purists might scoff at, but many listeners will appreciate. The midrange register strings, brass, and vocals remain clear in the mix while lower register instrumentation is given a boost, putting extra texture into the music.

Though the JBL Pulse 2 only has one speaker in each corner, it is not lacking in high frequencies because of its size. Bass response is strong and balanced out with crisp high frequency occurrence For anyone looking to spend around this price, there’s a variety of solid Bluetooth speakers with good performance. We’re big fans of the Bose SoundLink Mini II, Harman Kardon Esquire 2 and UE Boom 2. If you are looking for a cheaper option, the Divoom Voombox Party offers splash proof protection and a lightweight design while still providing good sound quality. If you have more to spend, we recommend the JBL Pulse 2 with its fancy LED lights.
